Any recipies for a hypoglycemic 9 week old puppy. I have him on Nutro puppy food but he is snubbing it now and with frequent feedings needed.....I need something he will like and readily eat. I tried a mixture of white rice, crushed up pieces of Nutro, and hamburger or chicken, he eats it but about every other time offered. And Im not sure if this is nutritious enough for a puppy although he is gaining weight
He is now 1.5 pounds so I have these questions...How much should he eat at a feeding and how often? Seems to me he is wanting to eat every 6 hours if that. Vet said every 3-4 hours well that just isnt happeneing. Should I give him Nutrical? If yes, how often?? and how much?? Please help!!!! He is happy, gaining weight, sleeps good, and VERY spunky. He just had one night with seizures which now I know could have been prevented with Kayro but I had no idea why he was having them. Did bio acid test for liver shunt and he does not have one. Then vet found low blood sugar levels so she diagnosed hypoglycemia. I have read and read on it and with him only having the seizures one time.....may not be a bad case and could have been prevented had i known. Well now I do and he has been fine for a week now with no episodes at all.

Now I know very little about Hypoglycemia, i.e. what foods would be best for them, but I have a sick pup at home too and I have finally gotten him to eat, I make him Healthy puppy meatballs. Here is the recipe:
Mix lean ground chicken or turkey with eggs, ground cooked carrots and ground up high quality dog food (like the Innova) and the missing link (the ground dog food and missing link act as the breadcrumbs would in regular people meatballs). Then roll this mixture into little bite size balls and boil them. Boil them for quite a bit to ensure all the fat is out of them (fatty foods are not good for pups). Then strain the water from the meatballs and let cool. To start with hand feed one meatball at a time to the pup...if he does not like it at fist just leave it, in my experience they eventually go crazy for them! Also another favorite treat is semi soft boiled egg yolks. Boil an egg for about 4 minutes...till the yolk is almost but not quite solid...sperate the yolk from the white and feed it to the pup...my finickie eatier loves these. You could also try low fat cottage cheese, and fish. |

I would keep some honey on hand (the liquid kind). If your pups sugar levels do become low (hypoglycemia) then rub some honey into his gums and it will be absorbed and should bring his levels up. I would also ask your vet about home monitoring so you can check his levels at home and know when you need to give him a bit of sugar or something sweet to bring his levels up.

Wow great advice and thanks for taking time to help me out!!! I went to the pet store and the manager there recommended wellness canned puppy food. Is this a good food? I am very familiar with Innova, I fed Cat formula Innova mixed with totally ferret to both of my ferrets. They loved it! So should I give it a try over the Wellness? As for right now I mix the soft wellness, rice, and scrambled hamburger and he eats it pretty good. I am just wondering how much and how often to feed? He will eat about 1-2 tsp of this mixture every 4-5 hours. Is that sufficient or should I be worried? My concern with him is, even more tha the eating, is he is a SpAz!!! Be romps and plays full tilt ALOT! I will take the toys away, quiet the house, and lay down with him to try and get him to rest....Nope he will bark at his tail....chase it....beat up his own paws....attack my hair and face, even beats up the carpet! I know rest is very important with hypoglycemia, and all the calories I give him be is prolly burning right off with his constant play play play attitude. Oh, and I supplement him too with Nutrical too. He will lick 2 or 3 BB size dabs right off the tub about every 3-4 hours also. DOes the sugar in the Nutrical make him hyper?? He was hyper before I started giving it but just curious if sugar has same effect on animals as it does humans. Sorry for the millions of questions, Im a really fussy Yorkie mommy!!! I wake up every hour to make sure he is covered up and warm and I have my sons single matress in the livingroom floor so I can sleep with the baby. The one time he had seizures on me (b4 I knew what they were) happened in the middle of the night, so now I am paranoid and DO NOT let him out of mu sight, and sleep with him.

I would get the Innova EVO it should regulate him but as someone else suggested keep some honey on hand. I would also talk with your vet about getting a glucose meter so you can test. Small dogs tend to have low blood sugar. They need to be fed more often and better quality foods. EVo should make his sugar levels back to normal.

Higher protein food should definately help with the low sugars. Any particular reason the pup is hypoglycemic?

Mara- Nope not sure....I was certain it was a shunt and scared to death!!! Bile-Acids were all low and actually lower than the vet expected for his size (1.1 lbs at the time) She feels he will out grow it when he stores some fat up on that lil bod of his! After thinking back...and not knowing....he had played really really hard the day he had the seizures....probably over did it. Didn't rest well and bam....in the middle of the night seizures. After hours of educating myself....speaking with 3 different vets, now I know. The breeder was NOT helpful....all she wanted to do was give money back and look no further....she felt he had gotten into something because none of her puppies had ever had problems so it just had to be me (very defensive) This is my second Yorkie, my first one from her is in great health, 2 years old, spayed, and she is simply royalty lol So when she wanted to give $$ back and be done with it I knew nothing would be followed up on so....1,000 dollars into this baby....and worth every penny....It's hypoglycemia. Actually could have been a one time thing brought on by exhaustion or and everyday thing. The vet couldn't tell me that but I treat it as though it is an every second thing. Nutrical, feeding every 3-4 hours (by hand) and NEVER caged or left alone. I do everything possible to reduce risk of stress and havoc. He is bouncing off walls and seems to be 100% fine I just want to make sure when he eats #1 he is getting enough, and #2 getting the proper nutrition. I am probably over concerned and at a lot of times feel alone...I stress over this constantly. I sleep ont he living room floor with him. I will not allow him to go int he car because he stresses, I won't let him be left alone. I don't even run downstairs without having my daughter or son watch him for the 3-4 minutes Im out of the room....I know....Im over the edge...surely someone else on here is the same way...right????? (tell me im not crazy ha!) lol It's not like having a "puppy" as most say, I have a baby....lol
