Yesterday on our walk, Roxy was limping. Checked her hind right and her foot was bleeding pretty bad, leaving a trail of blood every step she took on the pavement.
Once I got her home, I soaked her foot and one of her pads is pretty deeply sliced. She had a cut on one of her pads last year but it wasn't half as bad as this time. It's been bleeding continuously since yesterday around 4. I know it should be kept dry, but I'm afraid that if I don't wrap it, she'll like the pad right off! It's sliced all the way around the front of the toe (on the pad) and most deep about a half an inch long around the side of the toe. If she licks too much I can see her licking it off the front of the toe completely. I've had it wrapped with gauze and some polysporin with a sock over it and it seems to be holding up pretty good, the wrapping job that is. Yesterday, and last night, she was dead quiet, so I knew it was really bothering her. I had to carry her from sleeping spot to sleeping spot, and I still had to change her bandaging around five times because it was soaked with blood. Today it doesn't seem to bothering her as much, I'm having some trouble actually keeping her quiet on it, but she's hardly limping. If the pad comes off, does it ever grow back? Does anyone have any tips or advice? |

Yes,the pads does grow back but it take a long time.
You might want to buy a shoe to put it,on when she walks. If she is still bleeding a lot,I would take her to the vet.He might have to saw it,up. after each walk, clean it,up. It took titus,2 mths to close the 1 dime hole ,he had. |

I would be worried about the blood loss if she is still bleeding with no sign of stopping. As well as the location being prone to reopening...be careful not to let her play on it if you can. Let us know how she is!
Oh and if she often is walking in places that are hard on her feet, some boots might be really good for her

I took her to the vet at 1pm. She got a shot of long acting antibiotic, but other than that the vet said there isn't much she can do.
Keep it wrapped for a few days, than hopefully it dries out and than I'm supposed to try and let the air get at it. She's clearly feeling better today. Walking on it just fine, opposed to, last night, me carrying her around, literally... I guess I'll just have to keep her with my at my side, for the next few days straight. Thanks guys. |

Good to hear she seems to be feeling better.
I know how hard it is to keep em calm, but sounds like she better take it easy this weekend. |

Oh gosh, it's getting harder and harder to keep her quiet!
We have one of those swings, and Roxy spent a large part of yesterday occupying that all by herself. But as the day went on she started to get antsy. Right around when I decided seeing as it was a long weekend, I'd better get her into the vet's. *sigh* It's been a rough week for me already, but according to the vet it's not *that* bad. It's a deep slice, but it looks as though the pad will stay attached. |

Diamond...I'm glad to hear that Roxy is doing so much better. I am curious to know how long it takes a slice on the pad to heal. Please keep us posted.....and on a lighter note.....How many grey hairs did that pad wind up giving you this week! hahahahah

When I was riding out with my dogs they were always doing something - I vet wrapped many a pad, torn dew claw, cut leg.
Most of the injuries they incur like this you can take care of yourself with proper care. I only usually took to the vet for ones that were being really stubborn or bled profusely. |

That happened to my dog-some jerk left broken pyrex on the parking lot where I work. I tried holding it together with a bandage and finally the vet cut the "flap" off and it healed.
But please do NOT let it dry out-that is an old wives tale. Keep it moist. Those cells under the surface are normally protected from air by the outer layer of skin (or in this case pad). If you let it dry out, you will slow down the healing process. Get some guaze pads from the drugstore and soak them in mypotinc saline solution, place those on the wound. Fasten it with surgical tape. Then wrap that 3M Vetrap around it. Finally you might want to put a sock or bootie on it. It took a long time to heal, several weeks. And then the new pad had to be "hardened" again. It took me a while to realize that. Keep him on grass and soft surfaces before you let him walk or run on asphalt or pavement, as his new pad will be like a baby pad. Good luck! |
