Unhappy Buddy Was Rushed to Emergency Vet Last Night

My poor baby suffered a seizure in the middle of the night. Buddy is a 3 yr old Beagle, for those of you who are not familiar with us, we adopted him from a shelter 2 months ago, therefore, we have no idea of his history.

He sleeps up against me and I felt him shaking at 1 am this morning, I jumped out of bed and tried to wake him thinking he was dreaming, but he was not. I was so scared, he was stiff and his eyes were so big, staring out into space. My husband and I freaked!! He was petting him and talking to him as I got dressed, we put him in the car and drove to the emergency vet about 20 min away. As we are driving there, he came out of it as if nothing happened, his nose was cold and he just looked at me like, "whats up mom?"

The vet looked him over and told us to see our regular vet for blood work, he was not in any immediate danger. Today he is fine, playing with toys and eating just fine. I, however, am not, it is hard to function at work with 3 hrs sleep.

My vet was sick today, however, he called me and said he wants to run a Eurlicia test, not sure how to spell this. It is a disease caused by ticks. He was infested with ticks when we first brought him home. The vet ran the test last month that came back negative, but he wants to rule out this and other known causes of seizures such as liver and/or organ problems.

This is so scary, I know I hear many people have dogs with seizures, but when it happens to yours for the first time, it is so scary!

Can anyone give me any information on seizures until we can get Buddy to the vet?

Oh Alimel..I am so sorry for Buddy and for you and your husband. The one piece of advice a can give is to NEVER touch or pet a dog while he is having a seziure. I know this sounds heartless and down right cruel, but when my dog was going through seziures right in the vets office in front of the vet my husband got on the floor and tried to pet the dog. The vet blocked him and told him not to touch the dog. When a dog is having a seziure the dog is not in his right mind and cannot control any of his bodily habbits. If you pet the dog while he is seezing you run the chance of the dog going for your arms, biting you, clamping down and not letting go. My heart goes out to you and Buddy. I know exactly what you are going through. I hope your vet does find the reason why this is going on and Buddy can be forever stabilzed with everyday meds. Please keep me posted Alimel....your in my prayers.

I leave tomorrow morning on a business trip . I am dropping Buddy off at the vet for blood work before my flight and hubby will pick him up after work. Yikes, I wish I did not have to go on this trip..I hate leaving him.

We will probably know something by the weekend.

I am so sorry about Buddy. My boy Sid has seizures and they are terrifying to watch. I don't know a lot about seziures, only from personal experience and if you want to ask me anything then I'll be happy to help you the best I can. I hope you find out what's going on with Buddy

Fidget has seizures often. They used to only be when she was sleeping and that was when they were the worst. Fidget has a neurological disorder that she was born with though. But, the vet said since they were so mild and she didn't have them very often at the time that there is no point in giving her medication. Now when she plays too rough or gets too excited she will have a seizure. It sounds like Buddy had one for a long time though. Was he a stray? Maybe he had some kind of head trauma before he ended up at the shelter that is causing the seizures. I hope you find out what is causing them soon. They can be scarey. My husband is also epileptic so I don't freak out anymore.
