It's a sad, sad day

This is a post from another forum but it has touched me so much I had to cross post.

People fight daily against BSL and understandably so. But it is always stated "well if it had been a lab, it wouldn't have made the papers or been such a big deal" Maybe not, but here is what my breed deals with by the thousands everyday

Quote:
Just got a frantic call from my shelter contact....they were getting ready to put this guy down:

A 18 month old male who is a great dog and is named Axle. They begged me to leave work and come and get him...I have meetings lined up all day...and they had no way to hold him...the workers were screaming at the administrators...and none of us could stop them from sending Axle to the rainbow bridge.

I thought we had another week.

I have a big knot in my stomach now. Godspeed sweet boy....I hope you have a better life where you are.
Quote:
What a shame and a huge waste. He could have been someone's best friend. Way too young to be PTS and that face just put a knot in my stomach too. **** you just do the best you can. It's no fault of yours how he wound up there. What is so bad about it is the fact the shelter wouldn't just hold him until arrangements could be made. I'd have to say if I was one of those shelter workers I wouldn't have a job by the end of the day. That is just pitiful.
Quote:
I just talked to one of them...and they just got out of a 2 hour meeting with the "interim" Director because of how they carried on. They got written up for caring.

Axle is gone. The needle was in his arm when they were calling me. I can't get that commotion out of my mind.
Please note: A rescue group was in the process of making arrangements to get this boy out. God Speed Sweet Axle and to all the dogs who never get a fair chance at life

It happens to the best and worst of breeds, to purebreds and mutts alike. My heart goes out to all of them.

Amen to that, but what really gets me is over 16000 labs/lab mixes make up the pounds. Next in line goes way down to 7000 with GSD/GSD crosses.

That is absolutely reticules! poor guy

Sad thing is with "Pit Bull" Types they don't even get a week or a day majority are PTS on the spot no matter age. So I do see where your coming from.

This just breaks my heart! He looks exactly!!! like the foster I just helped through post op when his owner ran over him, broke his leg, let him live with ticks and then wanted the vet to put him down.
Those stats are astounding!
Reminds me why I live with the chewed up stuff, scratched up doors & spend my evenings cleaning poop & my floors. And that doesn't include all the fun stuff we do everyday, just the "chores". I do it so it's a few more babes that don't have to go through what poor Axel has.

It happens in shelters everyday all across the country. Its very unfortunate.

If any of you remember Ali, you remember my death row story. I asked a shelter to hold him, they said "NO PROBLEM", I called to just check in on him, he was scheduled to be PTS!!!! WHY??? They said holding was no problem! I got him before they put him down!

I'm sorry to beat a dead horse here, but it all goes back to spaying and neutering your pets, and getting rid of unethical breeders. If the shelters were not so full the ones that are there could stay around a bit longer till these rescues could get to them.
