puppy problem...
my dog gave birth to 3 pups yesterday by c-section, she totally ignored them, but is slowly coming around
problem is i had to leave for an hour, and the pups were crying and had their moths open like little birds, they looked miserable. i put the mom back in and 2 fed and the male just had his mouth open in misery and went to sleep. he seems listless, he was our best feeder, but now doesn't seem interested. i am so scared. we already picked him out as ours to keep he is pure white with little pink noses and feet. they are chi/pom/terrier mix we didn't leave them alone with hte mom, because she tried to bite when they fed, at first. but i held her head down and petted her, and it was a litttle better. when they seemed to not be well, her instinct finally kicked in and she licked them. i hope they make it. |

When one of my fosters had puppies ther was one little male that when he was first born was a good eater and healthy. She ended up having to go have a C-section because there was one puppy that just would not come out. After a couple of days the little puppy began to do as your described and wasn't very interested in eating. I would bottle feed him and tried to make sure that he had plenty to eat. One day I came home from work to find him dead. I am not telling you this to discourage you, just so you can be aware. Have you talked with your vet about this?

Puppies will often do that if they get to much milk at one time. Were you feeding him when he did this or was the mom?

it happened when Lola was feeding, but after the episode yesterday he was drinking out oof the bottle, and a lil came out.
i talked to the vet, he said it sounds like it aspirated into his lungs, and if i am having that happen there is nothing that can be done he said when they were born he had a very hard time getting him to breathe, no one told me that until this afternoon.i all but accepted that he's gonna die, then i go upstaris and he was feeding!!!! i know i shouldn't get excited, but for 18 hrs no interest in feeding, then the milk incident this morn when we tried, but2x he fed for about 4 minutes!!! i am trying to be more hopeful. i love em all, but i felt an instant connection to him(which was funny because i really am not fond of male dogs) and knew he was gonna be mine. his breathing is a little diff that his 1st day, but the past couple hrs did seem a little better

Are you making sure they potty really good? If Mom isn't doing it and you are, you might want to work the tissue really good over his bottom, and you might even want to try and dip the wipe into a little warm water (may mimic moms tong better). Sorry I can't really help all that much, I only know what I do from reading up on the subject

Hicks...it sounds like you may have to hand raise these pups...unless Lola decides that she's now a Mom (hard in in C-section). I know that Emma's maternal instinct kicked in but every dog is different and you really need to be on top of this. You can buy puppy formula with Clostrom (I used a formula called 'First Born'. and use a baby syringe. It may mean forcing the baby to take the formula but keep at it. DON"T feed too much as aspiration can be a serious problem. A little at a time and then place the puppy on your shoulder and rub it (like a human baby).
Good luck! EG |
