It's official - Miko is blind

Miko had surgery at The University of Missouri yesterday to remove the last of his infected teeth.

While he was there, I decided to have the Opthamology dept. run an ERG on him, which can formally diagnose progressive retinal degeneration.

His test was considered a "flatline" meaning he showed no response whatsoever to the test's stimuli. The doctor told me that for all intent and purposes Miko is blind.

I said I know he's not because I can still give him hand signals and he responds and he's not confused in the least about where he is outside.
The doctor said he may be able to see shadows.

Does anyone know anything about the ERG tests?

Sorry, don't anything about that test. Any blind dogs I've had the pleasure of being around have been incredibly adaptable....some dogs that I would have never guessed being blind were and managed wonderfully well.

I'm sorry Deb! I don't know anything about blind pups! But I do know you get the same mag subscription that I do! I have seen many articles on working with blind dogs. Maybe that will help? Give Miko many hugs!!! And to you also!!!!

I'm sorry about Miko but I'm sure he'll be able to get along just fine. Our little old blind poodle Angie could get around just fine, as long as we didn't move the furniture around. She could see a little bit out of her right eye, and the only time we really needed to watch her was when she was around the pool. He'll handle himself just fine- especially if he can still see a little bit

No, I don't know anything about the testing. I am so sorry to hear that. I am like you if he is blind why is he still going by hands signs? Maybe the tester wasn't working right. You guys will be in my prayers.

I'm sorry I don't know anything that would be helpful to you DTD. Give Miko a kiss and hug. I'm sure he has adapted as his sight has diminished and will do wonderfully with you there to assist him. Poor little babe, it's so hard to see these things happen to those we love. Consider yourself hugged DTD.

I'm sorry Deb and I don't know anything about that test.

I do know dogs get along beautifully. A neighbor of ours had a dog that was blind and that's when I realized that their sense of smell is so powerful it can lead them to almost any place they are trying to reach. I hope you can find out more about the test though.
