Question My lab...

has an ear problem. She needs medicine that the vet prescribed, in her ear once a day. There is blood and ear crud coming out. She is a black lab mixed with rotty, and pit bull, and whatever else got to the bitch. Is this rare? We checked the food and stuff, she does better with some but it is still gunked. So can some one tell me if this is a very rare thing or if we just have a dog with a common ear problem? Thank you all in advance.

she has been on them since yesterday so yes I should wait awhile to see how it turns out but I am wondering if lots of dogs have really gunky ears aaaaaaaaaaand I don't know what exact medicine but first you squirt some sort of liquid medicine in there wipe it out then squirt in some other meds.

Do you have the med bottle handy? My dog had TERRIBLE ear problems when we resuced him. It took close to 6 months to have the situation finally go away. I have had one flare up since then.

My dad has put the bottle some where. He gives her the meds. But wow 6 months? Did your dog feel better when his or her ears were cleaned?

I'm having a tough time trying to help you with this one because I don't know the meds that your dog is on. I can tell you to go to Walmart or Petsmart or Petco (which ever is closest to you) and pick up doggie ear wipes. If you were to wipe your dogs ear on your own ther should be NO and I repeat NO water to get into his ear. That's where doggie ear wipes come in. It's only natural once you squeeze liquid in your dogs ear that he will shake it out. Part of this is a good procces because it is losening some of the gunk and or infection. When the dog shakes it's head so of this nasty stuff will come out. I'm surprised your vet did not give you an oral medication too for your dog. I live and swear by Baytril. That was the only med that stopped the ear infections. We had Oso's ears cleaned two to three times a week for two months and still the infection would not go away. We then went to oral meds or one month and nothing, the vet doubled the amount the following month and still the dog was shooting gunk. We even had Oso put under and had his ear cleaned deeply to remove more infection. It wasn't until around month 5 that the vet said try Baytil. Oso had to take one pill a day and baytril ear drops twice a day. Baytril was our last resort. If that did not work we were looking at big time ear surgery and of course big time money. ....ever try to wrestle down a 120 pound Great Pyr to put ear drops in?.....Oso was our rescue dog and like I said it took 6 months for happy healthy ears to finally appear. Doggie ear wipes will help you clean the outside of the inner ear and around the bottom of the ear where the infection is dripping.

One of my biggest problems with Jinjo has always been his ears. Your dogs problem sounds like it might be a bit different from mine, but if your dog scratches at his ears it might be from allergies. I would suggest keeping him out of fields and to clean your house at least twice a week. Jinjo'll scratch his ears bloody to the point they become infected , most often after being in our basement or the field.

Phoebe had one ear infection and I'm watching her really close until Friday. I have an appt for her then because I think she may have another one now. I put ear cleaner in her ears and keep them clean & can only assume that's why she hasn't had as many of them.
It is dark stuff and after putting the cleaner solution in and rubbing them, alot of the stuff comes out with the head shaking. I then take a towel and clean it all off really well. My vet told me to use it daily until she's seen in hopes it will clear up whatever is there.
So hard when they're not 100%!
