Urgent help is needed. My Chihuahua has gone blinde

Nemo is 8 months old. He was fine this am when we woke up. He went outside, was fine, chased around the kitten in the house. Laid down, slept woke up and was fine. About 2 he walked past our bedroom door and into the dryer. He is walking Very drunkinly ( I guess it is the best way to describe it) he is holding his head high and is stepping very high with his front feet. He has normal body function ( he isn't peeing or anything all over) he is not at all pale. He is though, Blinde. You can all but poke him in the eye ( or whack him in the head.) and he won't do anything but stare. His pupils are HUGE He is walking into things, will take a few steps then stop and smell. I guess he is gettin his sense of direction.
I am waiting on our vet.

DOES ANYONE have ANY suggestions? He is not dehydrated. Has not been bitten by anything, we do not have poisons down anywhere and he has not left our yard ( he goes outside with me)

We feed proplan, but he did get a can of OlRoy wet food last night. I also wormed him with his regular dose of Strongid.

Please pray for my Nemo. I so don't want to loose him.

Do the pupils respond to light? Any chance of a blow to the head? Blood in ears?

I say go to a ER vet right away. Something is definately not right.

You will be in my thoughts & prayers. Please let us know what happens.

No blood in the ears, pupils are fixed and non reactive. Waiting on our vet to call back, our ER vet is a quack and we won't use them.

It isn't normal to be suddenly blind. I agree with Dax that he needs to see a vet ASAP

Sorry, no ideas but dilated, fixed pupils with sudden loss of vision seems like a very dangerous combination to me. Do the eyes have any discharge? Is he at all responsive to bright light shone directly in his eyes?

These symptoms do sound familiar to me although i cannot pin-point where I have encountered them before - I want to say stroke, though. If it were an old(er) dog I would have a better idea and the symptoms would make more sense in regard to a stroke. Given that the dog is so young, though, I really don't know.

For now, I'd forgo waiting for your vet and go to the ER right away - even if you think they are incapable. If it comes to vision, there is no fooling around.

Our vets first thought was west nile. He has no toxins in his system, his xrays showed no tramua to the head. He still has no pupil reaction. It is just like one min he was normal then BAM he was not. He is at our vet now. He is eating, drinking and is still not lost control of his functions. We will see what tomorrow brings.

I am sure we all truly hope that the little guy will recover soon. Please keep us posted what the vet finds and how Nemo is doing.

How was his mental state? I would think I would be terrified to be suddenly blind.

I sure hope he's ok..

My heart goes out to you. I have a dog that has recently gone blind, but at least it was gradual. Like Dax said, how scary for him to suddenly lose his sight.

I do belong to a support forum for blind and/or deaf dogs. They are so helpful. Let's see what happens, but let me know if you ever need the site name.

Please keep us posted. I'll keep you both in my prayers.
