About 3 weeks ago, I ran out of Front Line. I admit I was a BAD mom, and bought some stuff from WalMart. I knew I would not be near the vet, so I thought it would be fine for one time. I dont remember the exact brand, if I saw it I would know. It was not Hartz. It was the most expensive they carry.
The issue, Dana is having terrible hair loss where this was applied. She has probably lost about 3/4 of her hair that were in direct contact with the treatment. Her skin was almost scabby like. I gave her a medicated bath. Her skin looks better, but she still has hair loss. Clifford was fine, Meka got pretty dry, but no signifigant hair loss. Is there ANYTHING I can do?? |

I think the bath should be enough in time. As long as you don't see it getting worse, my guess is that it's all you really can do. Maybe give her some flaxseed oil or something similar in her food until the hair grows back to help make it healthy again.
It is tempting to get the less expensive flea stuff sometimes, but like you found out the hard way, it doesn't usually work out. It's scary to think of the chemicals in that stuff that would burn the hair off the dog like that. Poor Dana. You're not a bad mommy, heck, you're on of the best doggie mommies out there. Everyone tries something they regret later at some point. Don't beat yourself up about it and just keep an eye on the icky spot. If it starts spreading, even after the bath, call your vet. There might be something they can do, but for now it's most likely fine. Most of the cheaper brands aren't fully waterproof and wash off after a bath anyway. |

If it's really dry and scaling you could try rubbing some vitamin E oil on the spot. It's likely a chemical burn. The oil will sooth and re-moisturize the skin. If you've got aloe that will work too.

Shushu is allergic to fleas and one bite and she loses hair like that. I will never put fleas treatments on a pregnant dog but Poor Shushu was on fire from just one bite and she has several places that have been dug and scabbed over from her dermatitis. and I had to do it.

You're not a bad mommy dobermom - you're a great mommy. Poppy has suffered hair loss before on the application site and this was from a product we got from the vet! There isn't much you can do other than what's been advised - it will grow back.
