More Oddities on my Monkey.
Kirby is absolutely full of peculiarities this season. First he's got some stomach problems, then he gets a dewclaw grown in, butt problems...
And Today I noticed when I was combing him out after a walk, that Kirby's paw was somewhat sensitive. He yelped when I lightly squeezed his "wrist area," and recoiled when I tried to comb the hair around it. This is the OPPOSITE paw as the dewclaw. Regrown in dew is on the right, and he was slightly favouring the left. He was walking fine though. Among further inspection, I found that it was his carpal pad (see image) that was bothering him. When I pushed on his carpal pad (it's little enough that my entire thumb covers it), he screamed. The pad looks a little bit off. It isn't exactly smooth. The bottom tip of it has a part of the skin that looks like it's poking out above the rest, and is best described as looking like a flat toothpick that's about the split. The pads are black and rough as it is, so it's hard to tell if there's a scab or anything there. I don't think there is though. The skin just looks like it's growing really funky. I'm going to clean the fur away from it and let him be for a few days I guess, it isn't bothering him unless someone actually grabs that particular spot.

Maybe he is growing a spur or callous. If it is rough and dry, it could be sensitive between the rough parts.

It's not like he lies on cement a lot of anything.

I gave him a bath today, and it seems that a rather thick skin top layer is coming off. It's a little weird because it seems to have been sliced from the direction of his skin, which I don't see possible unless he got the entire pad snagged on something. It's currently "flapping" and there is obviously raw, exposed flesh underneath that is hurting him. I don't know if I should try to keep it closed so that it hurts less, or if I should let it open up so that it heals.

I would hestitate to close it up...that may also close in any bacteria present. I guess what I would do would be to cleanse it thoroughly and apply an anti-bacterial ointment. It's a strange place for a tear but dogs will be dogs
lol.Hope it heals quickly, EG |

Tell me about it!!!
I have NO idea how he can get cut upwards & outwards on his carpal pad, and it's an extremely ackward place to be poking around! The only way I can look at it (let alone treat it) is if he's laying on his back between my legs, with his head on my thigh (difficult to get the dog into this position) or him sitting pretty with my firm grasp holding his paw up (difficult for him to balance.) I can only imagine that he got it at the park either yesterday or the day before, but I don't remember any time that he had his foot stuck in/on anything. What a little freak.I tried to illustrate where the cut was, but I had to alter the shape of the pad because Kirby's isn't a gradual incline like the picture, it's just there. The cut isn't as deep as I made it look, and it didn't bleed, but deep enough to see pink. Last edited by Moo; 06-27-2007 at 05:19 PM. |

Moo coming from a owner who is ALWAYS ALWAYS dealing with cut pads and split pad, my reccomendation is to soak it in warm salt water for a bit. Then get some polysporin or zinc ointment (baby butt rash cream) and put that on...LOTS of it. Then if the Kirbmister will let you lighly wrap it with gauze for a few hours to let everything soak in as best as it will. Take off the gauze (because he does not walk directly on this pad it is okay to take the gauze off) let it air out.
Repeat this as often as twice a day min once a day. When you go for a walk make sure you wrap it up just to make sure it stays clean. What I am doing with Hudson right now, and his split nub claw thing, I am wrapping it is roll gauze then loosly taping it over with hockey tape. It works the best of all tapes because it stands up to LOTS of wear. If you have any more questions on wrapping pm me and I will wrap Hudson and tape a pic for you and send it to you. |

It kinda looks like a snag tear in that Kirby snaged it on something that pulled it open.

Here's a photo of it. That's his giant nose on the bottom. lol. The cut is the shiny looking white part, and it's pretty obvious since the pad is black. It's actually pink, and I don't know why it shows white in the picture. lol The skin opens up to the right, and you can't really tell from the photo because of the fur, but when the skin is peeled back, the entire section for 6 o'clock to 8'oclock is exposed as well. Thanks for the advice, Hudson. I had to clean it because there was hair sticking into it, and it stung like mad because he started hyperventilating. He won't let me hang around the area long enough to trim the hair away, but I just bathed him this afternoon and he hasn't been out since. I still have antibacterial ointment left from the butt incident, so I might put that on it, and I don't know about wrapping it. Pressure directly on it sends him into a screaming fit. |
