My small mixed terrier was a rescue from a tortured enviroment. She was in poor health with a broken jaw, detoriated hip, heart worms and missing teeth. Despite all that she had been through in her short life, she is the most amazing little dog.

We have had her 5 years. About 1 month ago she developed a cough. It has the appearence of asthma. She coughs in spurts and sometimes brings up flem. Otherwise she is happy with alot of energy and eats, drinks and no problems with elimintation. Her vet says there is nothing wrong with her physically and that she may have picked up a bacteria. He put her on antibiotics and Hycodone...when she was on the medication, she stopped coughing completely. When it ran its duration, she started coughing again. Back to the vet, same diagnosis, another round of medicine.... after it, the coughing continued.

To me it looks like she has asthma. No other symptoms than the coughing and ocassional flem.
Has anyone else had this problem? The vet says that her brain is telling her to cough....well, DUH.....he says her lungs are clear and he did blood work and checked for different illness of which coughing is a symptom and all were negative. I am deliberating whether to give her Benedryl. She does have skin allergies....any ideas? We have 5 other dogs and none have the cough....so I ruled out Kennel cough....oh, I was giving her normal steroid medicine(for hip problem) with cheese. I thought about maybe it is the cheese....or maybe a side affect of the long term steroid.....any ideas will be helpful.....

I would go with the steroids, they can have some pretty terrible side effects from long term use, give your vet a ring, or try some online research into side effects of steroids in dogs.
