Zoe has worsened :(
I'm not sure if you remember, but over a year ago Zoe was diagnosed with a heart murmur. For the most part it did not slow her down, but the past couple weeks she has been a little off.
We originally thought it was because people were working on our house, it was hot, we just got a new kitten etc etc. Yesterday i took both dogs to the barn while my mom rode and we went on a hike, big party day for them. Zoe was fine the whole time, the usual pooped when we got home. However she just kept panting, and didn't want to eat any treats I had gotten them (she's lost weight, which is not unusual for her, she's not a big eater)...which WAS strange. I got out our stethoscope and listened to her heart. It sounded like a whoosh whoosh. I then listened to Gromit's whose when lub-dub lub-dub. Po.opie. That isn't good. Took her to the vet, her heart murmur has increased from a 3/6 to a 5/6. Its just so hard to worry about her going downhill the same way Mister did. ![]() ![]()

I have no idea what happens with heart murmers, but I hope your baby is okay.
Are there any drugs or any sort of treatment for this type of problem? |

A year or so ago when she was diagnosed (which happened during a routine exam) they suggested we could go to a specialist, but it would have been $$$. So instead we opted to come back in 6 months and check up on it.
6 months later is was only slightly bigger so we didn't do anything, she was fine etc etc. 4-5 months ago she was coughing a lot, and it seemed from neck pressure so we took her in and she got x-rays and they revealed her heart was enlarged and pushing on her trachea (she had x-rays taken the first time her murmur was found) Our vet had us put her on blood pressure pills and she is still on them. She did a lot better today, I just think her big day yesterday stressed her out some. Right now she's playing and running around with Gromit. Her one perk is she gets only canned now since her appetite has decreased, which the vet thinks is from her slowed digestive system from her decreased blood rate (from the murmur). |

I'm really happy to hear she's doing better now. I guess her activity level will just have to be curbed and monitored to maintain the best health possible. Sounds like you've got her on the road to doing well. Very glad. Hugs to you both from all of us!

My dog has a heart murmur and one thing you need to keep a very close eye on is your dog's resting respiratory rate per minute. For my dog desired is 20-30 and anything over 40 is a danger zone and means he needs to be taken to emergency immediately. You might ask you vet what is the desired/danger resting respiratory rates for your dog.

From what you've described, it sounds like a heart valve problem..that would account for the whooshing sound and the other signs and symptoms.
Keeping her activity level to a more tolerable pace would certainly help prevent any over-stressing of her heart. Good luck and Best wishes, EG |
