Miko ran into the wall today

Some of you may remember earlier threads where I talked about the fact that the local vet college told me about 2 months ago that Miko was blind - based on the ERG test he had.

I completely disagreed with them because he was still following my hands as I moved them left to right, etc. I know he was at least seeing shadows.

Well, today, he ran smack into a wall. He stunned himself and kept going, but that tells me he's very close to REALLY being blind. He's also not following my hands as much anymore.

I know blindness won't be what takes his life, but it makes me feel we're that much closer.

Man it's hard watching your beloved pets grow old. He's got so much wrong with him, but so far he has been like the energizer bunny. I'm still giving him homeopathic eyedrops and an Occuvite pill (eye vitamins for humans, but supposed to be good for dogs, too) every day. I'm just hoping against hope.

Sometimes I wonder why God would have us live so long, but our beloved, domesticated pets so short. I wonder if it's His way of preparing us throughout our lives for death in general. I think too much huh?

Please, say a prayer for an easy adjustment for Miko's loss of sight. Thanks!

If only I had that piece of wisdom to give to you or share with you Deb. I have been blessed with Vanilla's good health but she is no longer a pup. I see a slow decline, but she probably thinks that about me too, so we are even. We can only do the best we can and that is to love our animals, protect them from harm. Laugh with them and cry with them. At times they are our best friends and our only confidants yet never ask for more. I feel sorry for people who have never held a pup, or stroked a cat or kitten. We are the ones who are fortunate.

Deb...your post brought tears to my eyes. Miko is undergoing a challenge that only he can overcome. As to why humans tend to live longer....do you remember that little story of a very young girl whose dog died early in life? The parents were distrought but the young girl was very stoic and accepting.

When asked why she thought her dog died before she, she simply answered....'well it's obvious! Dogs are put here on earth, innocent and pure. They learn this early in life and so are brought to heaven before we humans. It takes us ALOT longer to learn what love is really about.'

I've paraphrased the quote but I think I got the gist across.

Many prayers are going out to you and Miko. Let him teach you.

I like to think that we live longer so we can have more animals to love in our lifetime.

Oh Deb, my heart goes out to you and Miko. I watched Friska ( a pom I rescued) slowly loose her sight. It's hard seeing them that way when they are so full of life.

Aw, Deb. That's hard. But Miko is really lucky to have you as a mommy. I'll keep Miko in my prayers tonight.

Aw Deb, I am so sorry! If we could all somehow have some kind of magic, like The Witches of Eastwig and cure all of our furkids with one wish. And no you don't think to much. You wouldn't be a good Mommy if you didn't!!!
