Jill Is Driving Me Crazy!!

Jill cries (or whines) all the time!!!! She'll wake me up at 4:00 in the morning doing this, I'll get up to see if she wants up, knowing I have to get up an hour and a half later, then she runs back to bed. My mom says she does this to her all day long and my mom has to get around with a walker. I don't think it's for attention, I pay attention to her and Doxie all the time. She's going blind and I know she's hard of hearing but I don't know what to do. She whines to go out to the garage, I'll let her out and she still stands there whining, so I open the door to let her outside and she goes back to the door to want inside the house. I don't know if it's her age or not, but she drives me (us) crazy.

If this is new behavior, you should have her checked by a vet as it may be from pain. Dogs can't always tell us they are hurting.

If not due to illness, as long as whining works for her (ie. Someone gets up and does stuff for her), she will continue to do it.

I would ignore it. When she is good and quiet, then give her attention.

Jill is an older dog and may be starting to experience some Canine Alizheimers/memory loss or kidney toxicity. She may just not remember what she had asked for and is a little confused when she is moved from place to place. This can be the most frustrating aspect as a pet gets along in years. Be gentle and patient with her. When she askes to go outside...be there for her and support her. If the behavior is continuous, then be prepared to comfort her where she is and try to redirect her to more interesting things. Unfortunately senility is not isolated jut to humans.
It's a sad state.
Good luck.
EG

We are going through something similar with Miko, who's 12. For example, he eats his dinner then 10 minutes later is crying for his dinner, looking up at the countertops. We think he just forgets that he just ate.

He does the same thing as Jill at about 5 in the a.m. He cries and whines like he has to go out. If we let him out, he acts like he doesn't know what he's out there for. It's really hard to just ignore him because he won't stop and then we can't sleep. If we put him in another room in his crate with a treat and a cuddly toy, that sometime's works. Sometimes, putting him under the covers by my belly will get him to go back to sleep.

I would have her checked out by a vet to rule out something medical/treatable. If it's nothing medical, then a great big dose of patience is required. We'll all be old one day and probably bugging the heck out of somebody, too.

I really feel for them. What could be worse than getting old other than not being able to tell anyone what's bothering you?

Yeah that's how I feel. I'm trying to be patient with her. My husband is not a patient person though and yells at her. What's so hard is my mom will be 75 on the 15th and she is also showing the beginning signs of Alzheimers.

I'd freak on my husband if he yelled at Miko. That would just scare the bejeebers out of Miko (what little he could hear). NOBODY yells at my dogs (but me and that's rare! ).

Remind your husband he's may well be in diapers himself one day and he'll be needing similar, compassionate care! Give me his number, I'll call him and straighten him out!

When we got together, he was not a dog person at all-just a cat person and I had 5 dogs. He moved in with me and had to learn to share the bed with 2 dogs!!! I'm after him all the time. I have to remind him that these are my kids and he should feel the same because we don't have kids. Just to get on his nerves, I call him Daddy to Doxie and Jill--he really loves that!
