Allergies - Itchies - Thyroid Problems

All of these things my 3 year old Lab has. We give her oral pills once every day, and a bath every few days. I want to help her further because of the hives and such she has. We have eliminated the things she has allergies with, but is there any supplement or food I can give her that will help her?

I also heard of "Oatmal Baths", would that help? THAT I want to know before I stick her in the bathtub - because EWW what a mess, but a small sacrifice to make!

Sincerley, Katie

Well you don't actually put oatmeal (the edible kind) in the bathtub..lol. Go to the pet store and buy an oatmeal shampoo. Bathing so much can also dry out the skin and cause the itchy skin. So be careful with that.

What type of food is he on?

Thyroid conditions can cause something called seborrea. It is flakey, itchy, smelly fur.

The best thing (I've found) is to have some acne wash mixed in with the dog shampoo followed by a special Seborrea conditioner.

Conditioning is important.

I think I would maybe try bathing your lab less. Labs have an oily coat that naturally repels dirt, and sheds water. Bathing so much can actually just make the skin and coat dry by removing these essential oils. Look at your local pet store though, and I'm sure you'll find some shampoo designed for your sensitive dog.

Good luck

I can always tell when Jill's thyroid is out of whack. She starts itching really bad and her ears bother her. I bought some oatmeal dog shampoo. It seems to help her and the vet gave me some drops for her ears. It seems when her thyroid acts up, she has an odor to her.

With a dog with thyroid problems which can be a sign of autoimmune disorders, I have found giving vitamin C helps alot. A lab could have 250 mg twice a day safely. Also what food are you feeding? ( the name and type.). As far as the skin condition there are a few products you can add to the food. "Inflight" is my favorite and "hair of the dog" by Docs blend is another one.
With hives it sounds like its a food allergy, so if you tell me what she is eating maybe we can go from there.

You laugh Salem but years ago that was the treatment (amongst other things) that my brother had for his really bad eczema - talk about a mess to clean up He had to sit in the stuff for 30 mins...

I would also like to know what food AND treats you are feeding. It's no use feeding a good quality food if you spoil it all with the wrong kind of treats...

Actually yes I laugh now but I did it to Sierra one time. She had a wicked case of diaper rash for a week. So I had her sit in the oatmeal bath for a little bit each day and it cleared right up. I'd hate to see it in fur though!

And uh actually the old fashion oatmeal added raw to a diet at a tablespoon per 30 pounds of body weight in the food, twice a day helps to stabilze the adrenal glands. Like like in people excess adrenaline puts a stress on other organs- especially the pancreas, the thyroid and petuatary glands.
Its one teaspoon per 10 pounds - ie 1 tablespoon per 30 pounds of body weight. ( so like if the dog weighed 90 pounds thats 3 tablespoons). This is raw, uncooked right out of the cardboard and the old fashion unflavored kind..
