Drug sensitivity in collies

I found this article. Important for all collie owners to read and understand more about drug sensitivity in collies. This article is great, I was just searching to find out more info and I did just that.

I have no doubt as Borzois are probably part collie and they sure are sensitive in spades! The jury is out exactly what dogs were used with the greyhound, the sensitivity is never disputed!

However- I must add this. The reason collies are sensitive to heartguard is because they used a kennel of collies to test the drug.. Uhhhhh Would never touch heartguard for any breed..

I notice the gene can now be tested to see if they carry the one sensitive to this. I wonder if Collie breeders are testing for it before breeding? Perhaps this is something that can be bred out eventually.

I did a lot of reading about this - I printed out the list of problem drugs and took it to my vet when we took Mr. Al for his first visit, and discussed it with him - no ace for the neuter surgery, checking the list if any meds needed to be prescribed...

I'm going to get him tested too, so we can know for sure.

Have you heard of busteralert? They sell an alert tag for dogs who might have or have the MDR1 mutation to wear. I've got those coming for both Jackie and Alaistair, as mixed breeds are affected too.

I'm getting the test done but I will have to look into those tags. Thanks.
