Advice please?
Hi. I have a 12 year old Lakeland Terrier. In the last couple of weeks when I've come home from work, she's wee'd the floor. I always make sure she's out for a while in the morning and she's only ever done this before if she's had an accident. She's also drinking a lot of water. I have to stop her because she just keeps going and going. She's also started being sick this week after she drinks a lot of water. It's basically just the water coming back up and a little froth. I'm getting worried now as she woke me up through the night to get out as she was trying not to be sick. She also pee'd right in front of me which is not like her at all. She just wants to eat grass all the time too. Does this sound like she may be a diabetic? Or does anyone recognise the symptoms as something else? Any suggestions would be helpfull. She's otherwise fine. She's bright as a button and not off her food at all. I am planning on taking her to see the vet but need some advice now too.
Thanks in advance, Linzi x

How long are you leaving her for in the day? If she needs to drink water then she obviously needs it and you shouldn't really stop her from drinking just to prevent accidents while you are out. Excessive drinking could be a sign of many symptoms from urine infection to more serious things like diabetes so you really need to get her checked out asap.
Good luck and keep us informed. |

Hiya. She's in for around 7 hours, a long time I know. She's never had a problem with it before though as she just sleeps all day so I know there's something wrong with her. The vet can fit me in on Tuesday!!!! I hope she's ok till then! They said to call their emergency number if she's ill over the weekend but as I said, she's bright as a button (especially considering her age) and not off her food or anything.
I always leave her with a large bowl of water when I go out and carry bottles in the car etc. I wouldn't stop her drinking unless she's drinking herself sick. She really does not stop unless you stop her. Surely too much water in one go is as bad as not enough? I really don't know? Thanks for getting back to me, all comments are much appreciated. Linzi x |

wee girl - This is a waring sign of diabetes. I know this as fact, as this is exactly what my pup did. I took her to her vet the next day, her blood glucose level was 497. She is now on insulin injections twice per day.
My suggestion would be to get your baby to the vet ASAP. |

Drinking lots of water is a sign of diabetes in that diabetes causes kidney failure. However, with kidney failure, the dog's toxins will build up in its body causing it to be lethargic and act very sick. Drinking lots of water can also be indicative of a thyroid problem, possibly even a mass on the thyroid. Keep us posted!

From what you've described I would have her worked up for Diabetes. With her adanced age and the signs that she's showing, it is a possibility. If it were just a matter of peeing freqently then I would guess a tract infection but have your vet run a renal and complete blood panel.
Good luck, EG |
