New rescue dog and existing sub? dog

This is going to be kind of long, but want to give as much info as possible.

Just brought home a rescue dog. 6 mo old, neutered male, standard poodle . He was in fairly bad shape, skin and bones, several ailments which have been taken care of, he is energetic and curious well on his way to being a healthy, beautiful animal.

Have a 9 year old aussie mix who is kind of high strung/anxious and was semi submissive with old GSD that died a couple of months ago. They seemed to share, or vie for, the alpha dog role.

Tried neutral meet in yard of shelter but aussie was too distracted by all the dog noise and smells around shelter to pay much attention to poodle who was gently sniffing aussie. Poodle in crate on 30 minute ride home barked almost the whole way.

Dogs played well at first in yard running after each other back and forth.
Within a few hours poodle is chasing aussie and aussie is not standing ground at all and acts scared of poodle, yipping and whining. I think the poodle just wants to play but aussie is not reacting well

I've given aussie lots of attention, and the poodle, both together and separately. Aussie seems to be more and more anxious. Maybe it will just take some time, maybe the poodle is naturally dominant and nothing will change that, but I wanted to ask for any advice asap on how I might help the situation.

TIA
