What do you do about a licksore?

I guess with all that's been going on with Jill lately, I've kind of ignored Doxie, not on purpose of course, but I was noticing him chewing on his hind leg and looked to see what it was and it was a dime size sore. It was bloody and I cleaned it up, but how do I keep him from chewing and licking on it. My mom said he does it during the day, but she thought it was fleas. I know they (Doxix & Jill) don't have fleas. She said put Triple Bitter on it, but that would burn woudn't it? I'm trying to figure out a way to cover it up and make it stay. Any suggestions?

First I use a topcial on the wound. Then I put gauze on the wound. The last layer I spray bitter apple, let it dry and wrap as the last layer.. The bitter apple wont burn as long as the wound is protected.

I tried the vet gauze with Vanilla but she kept pulling it off. I didn't try bitter apple spray though. I wound up having to put her in a satilite aka a cone.

The bitter apple only goes on the top layer and allow it to dry. .. Then apply it around.. And I use neosporan for lick wounds. Femka licks the inside of her leg sometimes to go to sleep .. no clue why.. but I put neosporan regular pretty thick- wrap with gauze, the top lay spray with bitter apple- let it dry and apply. IT WORKS!

So far it seems to be working. Yesterday he kind of tried to get it off, but I changed it tonight and it seems to be healing up and he is leaving it alone.

Jimmy did this to his front paw when my hubby left on his first deployment to the Middle East. I think it was his way of dealing with the anxiety of "Where did my guy person go?" I have one of those blow up collars for him which are less cumbersome than the cones.

I'm glad it's healing up. Some extra hugs and kisses are in order for him.

Kenya did this a lot as a pup. If it was a wound and he just licked it thats one thing. If he caused it by licking than its another story altogether. Kenya had what I call hotspots and its anxiety caused. Hopefully this is just a one time incident for you. I had to battle Kenya's with "no lick" voice command and a squirt gun. I also had to battle a lot of other behaviours she had. Resorted back to crating her when I was out when she pooped on my side of the bed one day. Now she is happy and well adjusted but it is sometimes difficult to battle hot spot lickings.
