Shelter idea

Okay, i Had an idea...

Why cant we make shelters like pet stores(but not). You know put em in a strip mall or busy place. Also we could give em cool names not just a rescue or you know shelter. We could call em like, Skyes the limit Dog Rescue and just call it skyes the limit pet store. i mean we could make it nice and inform people about the breeds and the dogs there getting. We could even make up little gift baskets to send home with people.(leash, collar,toy,bowl...) I mean we could make it more of a store but really there rescuing a dog. We could have all the "designer breeds" but call em just the mix. I think this could work cause i ahve never heard of someone doing it like this and it would be very succesful i think. And since ive been trying to figure out my carrer plan i think this might be it to do this. i could groom and hire someone for manager and also we could offer some training and grooming to dogs we have adopted out. We could ahve lots of staff (one for each dog)(only a few dogs like ten at a time)and when someones interested in a dog they can go walk with the dog and family and tell em about the dog and also maybe a dog that would better suite em if its wrong and also warn em about puppy mills. We could keep em in nice runs and mostly have em out though socializing and walking. I really think this can work and now i cant wait to put it into action. Anyone else in on this with me. im am seriously gonna start planning this and i want some one to help me. I wil move anywhere when im old enough to move out and start this so anyone or more than one person can help.

I think this is a great idea, bclover. The only problem that I could see is that locating in a busy place is going to be expensive, that's why strip malls are often loaded with the same big franchises no matter where you go-they can afford the lease.

yeah, but if people funded it and also if you found a cheaper place or busy but not huge shopping area i think it will work.

I have seen one sorta like that! On my trip to NY we ate at a restaurant called George's restaurant, at the back of the restaurant there was George's shelter. It was all cats, but rows and rows and rows of cats and kittens. and on every table there was a little dessert menu holder thingy that had a sign "donate 50$ or more to george's cat shelter and recieve an equivilent George's restaurant gift card." So pretty much the money you pay for your meal is a donation to the shelter. I wish we'd known that BEFORE we ate!!!!

P.S. And I'd be with you 100% if you lived somewhere closer. lol

I think it is a great idea, the reason it hasn't been done before is cost. But as long as you can figure a way to handle that, I think it would be successful. Giving it a catchy name wouldn't be expensive though, I think that would be a good idea for any rescue to do.

One thing our humane society does here is have volunteers take a few dogs out to PetCo every weekend. There is also a rescue that has kittens for adoption in PetCo.

I think it would work well if you could combine it with a business so that some of the profit of the business can go toward supporting the rescue.

Every Saturday that we are in PetSmart there is always a group or a rescue in there with at least 15 dogs. I have seen so many get adopted....even the older dogs find homes.

I know, see this is what i have been thinking if things like that get so much recognition casue theyre in a popular place why couldnt we just have it there all the time.

Im not quit sure on the money part but i am figuring that out. I do want to have another bussiness in it too. I thought maybe a second hand store(you know cause theyre "second hand pets" or maybe a pet store, but respectable not stupid...You know we could sell all good foods and i could have you guys tell me your favorite brands of dog supplies and I could sell those.

YES! A good dog store! Man, I'd drive for miles just to go to a dog store where I don't have to explain in full detail why I'm not going to buy their store brand dog food. Even when they offer me "Special" dog dinner!

It could be a whole to-do! You could sell good dog food, and Kongs, and furminator, and all the other big things. Nothing stupid though like those treats you see everywhere "for the fat dog you love" Man those are annoying! But... the thing is, as great as it would be, the store can't be based on annoyance. Because the fattie's dog treats must sell, so that's more money towards the location and the shelter.

It all comes back to the same problem, really...

yeah, but you could sell a few of those biscuits at first then promote the good ones. You know at check-out we could have the samples of the good ones for dogs. Also we can have lots of help and show people what we suuggest and all workers will have to know lots and be able to explain and help any person in the best way possible.

Love that name... Go for it. And have "used" pet supplies, like a second hand store... The used items go to provide for the "used" pets, and you take donations from anyone looking to get rid of old dog stuff, and the new stuff you buy goes to support the store, and you.
If you could open a small store, then perhaps you could get different organizations to come daily with their rescues. Then you wouldn't have the complete care of all the dogs, which would be huge... But Good luck. Hope you can do it...
