Tips anybody?

So, Poppy has developed this disgusing habit of rolling in poop, well not really rolling, more like "I'm going to rub my neck and shoulders in this". It is always the same kind of smelling poop as well. I think it may be fox poop. Anyway, the first time it happened it was straight in the bath, however, she's done it 3 times this week and I obviously can't bath her 3 times a week.

Yes, I know the ideal thing is to not let her do it in the first place, but I watch her so much if I see her going to do it (she will sniff intently at one spot and then quickly rub her shoulders in it) then I stop her. However, this week I haven't seen her do it and because it's so dark I've only noticed when I got home a took her collar off and it's like "when did that happen" - LOL.

So, I can get the muck off with a wash cloth but the smell is still in her fur. Has anybody got any ideas on what I can do to get rid of the smell??? (PS, sorry for the looooong post to ask a simple question )

Poopy poppy!!

No advice just sympathy, as our Golden Retriever was notorious for this and we never did find a way to stop it (sorry!!), but I'm sure someone else here will be able to help!!!

I just thought that I would tell you that I carry baby wipes for the dogs. It is a temporary solutions to cover up nasty smells and get some of the crud off. They do make waterless, scentfree shampoo (for hunting dogs) that might help get rid of the nasty smell that Poppy has blessed you with. Other than that, all I can say is a dog will be a dog. It smells good to them.

Deepest condolances.

My Ellie used to love to roll in deer poop - at least that was vegitarian poop. I just got used to spot washing her a lot. Assign a bucket, sponde and old towel to keep in the garage for the poop washing.

But look on the bright side - at least she is a lab with a short coat - easy to wash and dry. It was horrid doing it with a rough coated BC all the time.

Poppy - you silly baby! Sometime back we had taken Chloe to a street fair and people had petted her with dirty hands and her fur got this fishy odor. I had tried a million ways to clean up the smell - wipes, soap, uugh. Dax suggested that I try baking soda and water (i think the proportion was one teaspoon to a sinkfull...correct me if I'm wrong Dax) . Dip a washcloth in this solution and wipe her down - it was amazing - worked like a charm for Chloe. Perhaps you could try that Baby.

Oh Poppy you dearest little darling!! I often wonder what is the reasoning behind this marking? Maybe she doesn't like your shampoo Baby. LMAO. sorry, but it is funny, at least it wasn't something dead and decayed..yuk!! One of Sophies favourites to roll in.

Nothing wrong with a long thread. I think if the thread read simply "How do I get my dog to stop smelling like poo?", we would be a tiny bit confused. LOL.

Baking soda works well, as smehta said, can't think of anything else at the moment.

Baby, they say that dogs do this to make themselves more interesting. So any attention you give means the tact works. Having said that I can't imagine leaving your dog smelling like poop for a couple of days.(minutes).

You could try re-directing the behaviour since it happens when you are with you. Use that "recall" she's already learned so well. Take her to a cleaner area and "play rub tub tummy" with her. If she does it on any blankets at home you could try bringing that along.

I would work on distracting her with your obedience training until you're past the temptation.

Thanks for the advice/sympathy! Yes, I do the recall if I see her about to do it but in the dark that isn't always possible, I think she must wait and until I'm far enough in front or behind then say "Ah, ah, here is some lovely fox poop, mummy doesn't have eyesight/smell as good as me, I'll roll in it and take some of this stuff home with me, that way mummy can enjoy it too"

I'll carry on with the recall and also do the bicarb stuff. I've tried the baby wipes but they are too pidley small - LOL
