Questions about fostering

Hi Everyone,
I am about to get my first foster in about 6 or so days and I have a few questions. Do the dogs that come into foster usually come with a collar or do I have to get one? Do I have to get a licence or registration or anything like that for my foster? Typically how long do the dogs stay in your foster care before finding a permanent home? I know that things like age and health matter, so for arguments sake we'll say a 4-6yr old, good health, friendly. Also, it is a boxer puppy, if that helps.
I will be asking the rescue as well before I get a dog but I just thought I'd post here and see what the norm is.

Most good shelters will assist you with supplies if they have funds to do so. Some of them are struggling for funds so that might not always be the case. Often, they will provide food, vet care expenses too but I wouldn't expect that necessarily. In the case of a puppy, I would expect there to be high demand so as long as advertising is available, you might not be a foster to this one very long.

I wouldn't think you'd need to license a dog you don't own but, if so, I would think that would also be the responsiblity of the shelter to have the dog current on shots & licensing. (They should at least know the rules about licensing a foster in your city.)

Good luck with your new foster pup! I hope all works out well for you.

I can only state for Virginia but you do not need a license for either you or the dog to foster. Typically while if a breed foster then can help you, really having your own supplies will help in the future. Are you fostering for a breed club? Usually they help with veternarian care. Depending on when the dog is able to be fostered into a home ( temperment, housebreaking and assesment of personality) depends greatly on the dog and your abilities. I have had some stay as little as a week, a few as long as a few months if you had medical issues.. Advertising is usually done through the breed club or organization.
If you are adopting from a shelter to foster- make sure you can adopt back out..

Also- for cheap supplies try petedge ( pet edge) . They give discounts for fostering homes..

I am doing it through a breed rescue, and I know they are covering vet costs but food is my responsibility. I bought a collar jsut because it's better to have too many then not enough and it's no big thing to buy one, but I'm still curious about licensing. I'm in Ontario Canada if that makes a difference.

I have no idea about Canada. Here it is pretty much rescue by rescue. Most cover the vet costs and will help with supplies if they can and if you need it but most seems to fall on the generousity of the foster.
That's how it is with the group I foster for. I don't mind. Over time, I've collected some extra items as well so I have a variety of collars, choke chains, pinch collars, muzzles, toys etc... I get most on line also because I find it a ton less expensive so my $ goes alot further!
Best of luck and wishes with fostering!! There are never, ever too many!
