Exclamation

Does the temperature of the Dam always go down before whalping? My dam's temp has been at 98-99.1 for 3 days. I'm not seeing this as a very consistant way of knowing when she'll whelp. She only eats the wet puppy food and refuses the dry food...is this normal? Please help me out here...this is my 10th litter but none of my Dams have ever had this unusual behavior (temp and food) thanks.

Hi Nathan,
A dogs normal temperature is around 101.5f you are looking for a constant drop down to about 99f, for at least 12 hours, how often are you checking, her temperature can fluctuate slightly during a normal day. I would check it now, then again in a couple of hours to make sure it is the same.
Not all whelping ******* follow the same schedule, some of mine don't nest or pant much either. You will be looking at 2 more days, how swollen in the belly is she? I assume you definately know she is pregnant?
I would wait another day, as she doesn't seem to be in any discomfort as you say, resting is normal, most will slow down, some will eat like a horse, others will become fussy and eat little. Diarrhea in the last couple of days can also be normal, as well as straight after whelping.

She is large, yes she is definetly pregnant. We had xrays and ultrasounds. I'm not sure what you mean about her temp. It has been the same for like 3 days. Its low. Why? This has never happened before. Her temp hasent been over 100 since sunday. Sorry if I confused you. I am just not sure. She is on her 61day(by the way)
thanks!

It does seem a little odd, normally only goes down for about 24 hrs max beforehand.

Have you rung the vet at all, I would give them a quick call, I'm sure she will be ok, so long as she is not panting, or straining. write back

He said that the temperature is not a very good way of know "when". He said she is fine and she probably will start the 1st stage of labor anytime now. Hmmmm...seems a little vauge to me. I will just keep watching. Thanks for your help!
