Poop Detective 101- Diarrhea

This is great information I'd love to share from my book "Dog Owner's Home Vet handbook' (I highly recommend it). This does not replace good vet care but educates you on what you should be looking for and it's possible meaning.

Diarrhea is a symptom - not a disease.
To determine the cause of diarrhea (and be able to tell your vet) - examine the color, consistency, odor & frequency.

COLOR
Yellow or greenish stool = bowel hypermotility
Black Tarry Stool = bleeding in upper digestive tract
Bloody stool = red blood or clots lower bowel bleeding
Pasty, light-colored stool= lack of bile (liver disease)
Large grey, rancid smelling stool = inadequate digestion
CONSISTENCY
Water Stool = extreme hypermotility & bowel wall irritation
Foamy Stool = possible bacterial infection
Greasy Stool = malabsorption
ODOR
Food-like or sour milk = Hypermotility and malabsorption
Putrid smelling = intestinal infection
FREQUENCY
Several in a hour, each small with straining = colitis (inflamation of large bowel)
3 or 4 times a day = malabsorption or small bowel disease

I have added it as a link in the Health Sticky for quick reference. Once everyone has had a chance to be totally disgusted and post their responses, I'll make a copy just for the health link.

I had never heard or read this before I got the book. Next one I'll do is on vomit. (after dinner tonite)
