Puppy eats poop

Our 4 month puppy is very interested in other dog's poop. We constantly try to break this habbit through discipline. Is there any other remedies out there?

Lots of puppies eat their own poop, it isn't fun to get kisses later, learnt the hard way. LOL. It could be a problem with the diet, or of course, it could just be fun.

The easiest solution is to pick it up. If it's not there, he can't eat it. Distract him from it, once he's done pooping, call him over, and then pick it up. No more temptation.
Or you could spray the poop with some nasty tasting (right, nastier tasting than poop) tobasco/bitter apple.

You don't really need discipline... If you catch him eating it, you just need a "HEY! LEAVE IT!"... Anything beyond that is unnecessary.

If he is eating his own, there are products out there that will help stop his called Deter. But eating other dogs is harder, unless it is just at home. Then simply what Moo said. But if this is happening while you are out for a walk or at the park, etc. You are going to have to be consistant with corrections. Keep the pup on a lead at all times, even if it is a long line that is is dragging so that you have the ability to correct him as soon as possible. Also, a good thing to teach a young puppy is the command leave it and the command drop it. No matter how yummy the kitty litter box smells when the dogs come in, if I tell them to leave it, they look at me like I just took away their last toy but, they do not violate the command. And drop it is nice for preventing them from ingesting something they are not suppose to as well as for the releasing toys when playing

Yes, common problem in dogs. Solution, not so easy. Preventing, EASY Ive talked to a few people at the park who own dogs who eat their own, and other dog's pooh. Some said additives worked, some have had no success. I just dont understand...pooh shouldnt just be standing around vegetating. Pick it up. Problem solved.

We have two golden puppies and I swear I shouldn't need to feed them anymore because they eat each other's poop! They are getting better. Now, if I could just get them to stop eating the horse manure. They really like it when it's frozen - manure popcicles! I figure "this too shall pass".

Good Luck.
Mine is almost 6, and horse manure is her favorite treat. It's the only kind of poop she'll even stop to smell, but still.

Deter tabs are great for eating their own poop or each other's poop in a multi-dog household.

As far as other dogs, like at a park, you will just have to keep an eye out.

Scooter quit trying to eat other dogs' poop when we put him on deter, also.

Good luck!

LOL!!! Yes, horse manure is my dogs fave too, and the frozen kind is GREAT for bringing in the house. LOL!!!

From what I have read , dogs do this for a couple of reasons, one is instinct, they eat otehr dogs poop to cover the smell in thier territory, thus keeping it their's and open to females or to keep predators away. Next is for food, I know , how gross, but actually , with horse poop and I guess other animal poop , it is chaulk full of vitamin K, something that lacks in most dogs diets. So it is not all bad, just terribly gross to us but for survivial it makes perfect sense in the wild.

Dogs do all kinds of gross things that are ingrained into their instincts, like eating poop, vomit, etc, it all comes back to the instinct to survive, vulgar to us but not them. yuck!

Kirb never did try to eat other poop. Just his own, when they're frozen.

A drop it command would be good over here too. Kirby only knows leave it and give it to me. So I better be quick, or it will end up in my hand. LOL
