Vomiting

It is possible to get a clue to your dog's problem by noticing how and what he vomits. (This does not replace vet care but helps you communicate symptoms to the vet)

REPEATED:
Dog vomits his food then continues to retch bringing up a frothy clear fluid. This suggest a stomach irritation (spoiled food, grass, certain infectious illnesses)

SPORADIC:
Dog vomits on and off but not continously. No relationship to meals. Appetite is poor and dog looks haggard. A thorough check up is in order - suspect internal organ illness.

VOMITING BLOOD:
Fresh blood in vomit indicates a break in mucus lining. Common causes are foreign bodies, tumors and ulcers. Material that looks like coffee grounds is old blood partly digested. Condition is serious and requires a trip to vet.

FECAL VOMITING:
Dog vomits material that looks and smells like stool. Dog has obstruction in intestinal tract or abdominal trauma. Condition requires professional aid.

PROJECTILE VOMITING:
Stomach contests ejected suddenly sometimes for several feet. Indicates a complete blockage in upper gastrointestinal tract. Or increase in intracranial pressure (brain tumor, blood clots, etc).

VOMITING FOREIGN OBJECTS:
Puppies with heavy roundworm infestion my vomit adult worms. Hair balls (BEZOAR) and other material too large to fit thru digestive sytem is expelled.

EMOTIONAL VOMITING:
Dogs can vomit when upset, excited or when suffering from a phobia (like thunderstorms). Remove from cause of anxiety and treat with Tranvet (tranquilizer)

MOTION SICKNESS:
Often dogs become nauseated and vomited when riding in cars. Most will eventually get accoustomed to it or outgrow it. Can be treated with Dramanine by mouth 1 hour before travel. If trip is a long one, tranquilizer is better.

I have a question.

Our dobes, both of them and the one I had before these two use to just vomit yellow bial. I was told that this was just becuase of an over production of bial and they need to purge their system. I now figure it is the breed because all three did/does this.

Does the book say anything about that ? I mean , they are normal besides this and my last Dobe lived to be 12 wihich is at the long end of a Doberman's life span.

Dax does that too. I think it fits in the sporadic section, over-production of bile is an internal organ problem but I assume doesn't require treatment. It does say if the dog vomits once or twice and has no other signs of illness - it may not require attention.

Kirby pukes stomach fluids sometimes... when he's too picky to eat what I'm giving him, then gets hungry later... When he's hungry, he throws up.
