Rescue only your breed?

I didn't want to steal Whim's thread with a post so I will ask this forum: Would you rescue or foster only the breed you have or the breed/s you know about? In my case (right now, though it could change at any time) I would be more comfortable rescuing or fostering a breed I already have or know. Though in one breed there can be many tempraments I would think it would be easier to know the traits, attitudes, etc. What is everyones opinion on this and why?

I think it is important that people concentrate on a breed, or type of dog, that they have expertise with. I take issue if someone, not either on of you guys, says any dog outside that breed should just be killed. You both love dogs but are pros with your breed. If I were rescuing, I wouldn't be able to handle a Mastiff or a Rottie or a GSD... or many others, but give me a little fluffy thing or a schnauzer or even a collie and I'd have a shot!

Most often I do Dobermans, I orefer Dobermans over others. I feel I hvae the most knowledge with them. I am also comfortable with Danes.

I have done a little mixed breed, and a few other breeds, but the Dobermans is where my heart is.

I rescue primarily Siberian Huskies, because that has been my chosen breed for years. I have taught all-breed obedience, agility and handling classes, and have also worked in two all-breed animal shelters. Thus, I have fostered and adopted out other breeds on occasion (an ACD/Corgi mix, an APBT, an Alaskan Malamute, and a hound mix with a litter of puppies). In recent years, I have started dealing with neglected Alaskan Husky sled dogs as well, as I have quite a bit of experience with them.

I think it is good for folks to specialize in the breeds they are most educated/experienced in, though it never hurts to help out with mixes or other breeds if you feel comfortable and capable.

Some animal shelters adopt out Siberians to homes with cats and without proper fencing, because they are not familiar with the breed. I actually had the local SPCA change it's policy on this while I was working there, and tried to provide as much breed-specific adoption information as possible for other purebreds.

I used to do all breed, but after I got my first dane, that's where I concentrated my efforts.

I'd never turn my back on any animal that needed me, but danes are my primary focus.

Oddly enough, I 've always rescued and foster Rotties. I usually take in the tough cases. I have not had a case in a year now. The last was a beautiful girl we named Luna, We rehabed her for nearly a year then discovered her she had SERIOUS cancer. At the same time a man who came along met her and fell IN LOVE with her. Oddly enough he bred rotties, He had to have her, adopted her ( she was spayed) took her on home and spent alot of money on having her cancer treated at A&M. She passed about 10 months later, but I know she was loved in the time she had with us. We've not had a rescue since her.

I try to stay within the breeds I have dealt with...German Shepherds and northern breeds.....one of the more difficult ones is a Husky/Chow mix.....this dog has the energy of a Husky and the stubborness of a Chow.....

The bulk of the rescues or fosters I have had have been my breed. However- there is always room for one more. Even when I had shepherds, I rescued a dane, an affenpinichers, and a JRT/westie mix. ( uh I was a foster failure- they stayed with me.. lol ) Now having Borzois, I rescued Femka, but also just added Jasmine a rough collie..
Maybe I am nuts- but to me there is always room for one more. If I have to feed 4 why not 5.. Take out 4- why not 5.. Brush 4 = why not 5..

I prefer labs. I know about the breed and as many as there are I really don't have to venture outside the breed. They need a ton of help. .
