Diet & Questions

I posted a question a while ago about my dog having problems going to the toliet. Your answers were brilliant and I thought it was the end of my problem.

My dog Ellie (terrier cross breed) is now passing motions that start off hard and end up waterlike. They are yellow in colour.

On friday she passed what looked to be like a pile of mucus on the bedroom floor. Ellie has never had an accident in the house, she seemed 'upset' by it too. I am quite worried.

I am thinking of changing her diet as I dont believe what she is on is good enough - she is on Bakers complete mainly. I was going to upgrade her dry food and wondered if anyone could recommend anything. Also she is 8 years old - should she be on a senior diet?

Her booster vaccinations are due next month so she will be going to the vets then so I will be getting a full health check carried out. She is in good health otherwise which is why I am reluctant to take her to the vets right now, if she has another mucus accident then I will take her asap. Unless you think I should take her sooner?

Anyone any thoughts?

Dax has posted a great thread on poop and its consistency you will find it a couple of threads down etc. Personally I would feed rice and chicken (not skin) over the next couple of days and see how she goes. If it happens again give your vet a call to see what they recommend. She could just have had something that upset her and she couldn't let you know that she needed to go in time.

You say she is on Baker's complete mainly, what else are you feeding? If you are changing the other stuff frequently that could be upsetting her.

Mmm... that could have been vomit.

How long has this going on... could just be a bug. I agree with BabyE with a bland diet for the next few days, and see how things go... if things still don't harden up, yep, talk to the vet.

Thanks for that I will check out that post.

She gets Bakers everyday, but will get Cesar added about three times a week and cooked ox heart perhaps twice a week.

This is the same diet since she turned adult. We dont change anything.

The only other thing I wonder, is that she gets cows milk everyday at morning and night. Its not much, only about 5 mouthfuls but I know its bad for them (I didnt know that when I started giving it to her). As she lives with my mum - she has a garden and I dont, its hard to dictate diet to her.

Someone I know has fed their dog cesar all his life, but as he is older it is now disagreeing with him more and more. They have had to stop giving it to him completely on the recommendation of their vet - the vet says it is way too rich to be feeding older dogs on it. Yep, cows milk will cause the runs so you might want to stop giving that or at least cut down on it.

You could explain to your mum the effect the diet is having on your dogs health, if she realises that what she is doing isn't the best for her then I'm sure she will change to the new routine.

If your mom is set on giving the dog milk, then have her at least switch to goat's milk. Doesn't have the same set of proteins and is much better for them.

Thats brilliant advise, thanks guys :-) I will let you know how she goes.

Oh, they do Cesar senior - what do you think to that? Or should I just get her to stop feeding it?
