Unhappy Jekyl & Hyde when in or outside

Hello,
I am new here, and typed out a very lenghty description of my question, then it was lost when I hit submit?
Here is the basics, my dog stopped eating about 1 1/2 weeks ago, vet checked, blood, stool and everything else and says, all OK, GREAT help he was. He, my dog has not slept for 48 hours and walks around the house in a stuper, bumps into things, appears to have trouble seeing but vet said there is no problem, could be fatigue as He has almost fallen asleep standing up. He does this ALL night, all day. He lays down for a minute (max) and when he has just fallen asleep, bang, up again. I have gotten him to eat toast with peanut butter to try and get some protein in him. He keeps it down without vomitting, the vet had put some "gastro" dry and can food on the bill, he ate one can but that has been it, no more. Now this is the STRANGE part, if I take him for a walk, We do not even get 15 feet up the driveway when my dog changes. I don't mean he gets a bit more active, he TOTALLY changes, he is pulling on the leash and jumps acrossed a 4 foot ditch, several times without a wimper. He appears to be a completely healthy and vigorous dog. NO exaggeration, it's like there is a switch that is turned on, I don't get it, he is completely different. Lifts His leg to urinate, sits to pooh (solid) with NO discomfort at all! Today after Our walk, I put him on his tie-out and we played ball, he chased it, played keep away and "fought" me for the ball, I even gave him milkbone type treats and he grabbed and gobbled them up, just like before this started, he even catches them in air. Then within 2 minutes of being back in the house, poof, delirious again. I felt it may be something in the house so I purchased a HIGH quality CO detector, NO carbon monoxide, no natural gas and no propane was detected. My furnace is only 9 years old and no one else in the house had ill effects, but I just wanted to check everything. There have been no animals introduced and no changes to the house, I cannot understand this. It is extremely distressing and is driving me nuts, as long as he is outside, he is fine, but he needs to sleep or I fear for him. It is so strange, he is inside and appears to be at death's doorstep, I take Him out and he seems in perfect health.
Please, sincerely please, if anyone has ever heard of anything like this before or has ANY clue as to what is going on here, let me know. The vet has been NO help.
Thank-You,
Dog's friend Dan,

Male dog? Fixed, not fixed? How old? If not fixed, any female around that could be in heat? That would obviously cause hormonal changes in your dog which might cause some of the behavior described. But seriously, what I would do is go see a different vet. If you are not happy with your current vet, change vets. I would have a blood panel done to start with. Make sure that everything is functioning normally. Also. document his behavior. I would keep a journal. Times of the day when he is restless, when he is eager to play, anything that can be of help to the vet. Other than that, I just don't know what to tell you

Something could be wrong with your dog internally. You should probably take your dog to another vet for a second opinion. You should also get some blood work done, maybe x-ray's. I'm not sure exactly, but it sounds like to me that you need a second opinion. But definitely get the dog checked out internally. I'm sorry I can't be of much help.

Hello and Thank-you for the responses.

He is male, not "fixed" and is a few months short of 9. Blood work was done, along with stool and a physical check, all appeared OK. I called today, a different Dr. at the same clinic feels from my description that it is neurological, perhaps brain tumor, something with the spine, but is going to do a neurological test today. Other than that he would need to travel to a larger clinic for MRI etc. and said that would only diagnose the problem or confirm Her opinion. It would probably be irreversible and that a tumor would explain the consant walking, no sleep AT ALL other than a minute or two here and there and also lack of appetite. As for the drastic change when I take Him for a walk, she can't explain nor has She seen anything like that before.
We go today at 2:30 and I don't know if He will be coming home. He still has treats and toys from Christmas.
He feels great outside, I've thought of just getting an insulated dog house and let Him live out His life out there, but if She is correct, that may be selfish and cruel to MY FRIEND.
Thanks again for responding.
Scared & Shattered in Ontario,
Daniel,

Dan,
I am so sorry that you are going through all this with your puppy. They are like our children, and when they hurt, we hurt. we all feel your immense pain and have you in our thoughts.

a word of advice... before you go thru all the expensive testing such as MRIs and CAT scans, BE SURE they have done ALL of the necessary bloodwork. When something like this happens, it really could be as simple as a hormonal imbalance. Namely, TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). Be sure they do this test. Dogs are very delicate creatures and, with TSH in particular, they need to have the "Goldilocks levels"... not too much and not too little, but just right. Even a slight imbalance can cause things to be horribly wrong. So, make sure they do this test, and please keep us updated.

Once again, you are in our thoughts...

Thank-You, SO much

Hello and Thank-You all,
Yes, they did TSH and also kidney test, all bloodwork, his head was "leaning" when He walked in circles and all signs pointed to a growth on the brain. Not too many choices with cancer. She felt it best for Him to be "put down" an awful term, I prefer let go for His own good. He, Riley, is gone now, i TRULy hate myself, this is the worst thing to decide, He was a constant part of life in Our home. No matter how upset You were at Him .....or He at me, when that door opened after a day at work, He flew down the stairs to meet me with bouncing joy, a flapping tongue and His "cat" hugs my Daughter called them, as He walked between Our legs and rubbed against You!
I stayed with Him to the end and just feel He thought, "OK, we're done here, take me home now." Did I let Him down, the vet says no, it would have just gotten worse and I made the right choice for Riley, but I just don't feel that way. As the first needle was just to relax Him, He dozed off into a comfortable sleep, I told Him I was glad after over 3 days of CONSTANT walking and being awake to please sleep peacefully. He was comfortable and relaxed with His head in my lap as I sat on the floor in the corner.
I can't live with myself, but everyone here says, I had no choice, things just happen, to HUman friends and family and pets who are Family, it still hurts so bad, could I have done more for Him.
I miss Riley, I loved My Friend as much as any other Family or friend, right now, I can't see doing this again. Friends like Riley brought so much joy, He was so smart, so many memories. The pain I felt today was lightened by the thoughts, but I ...I don't know, home will NEVER be the same.
Sorry for rambling here and Thank-All for all Your kind thoughts.
Sincerely,
Sad, sorry, Daniel-Friend of Riley.

Oh, I'm so sorry. You did the right thing. I can't even imagine not even being able to sleep or not being able to enjoy living anymore. I'm sure he thanks you for making such a selfless decision to help him not to suffer anymore.

I am so overwhelmingly sorry for your pain and your loss. You did a very selfless thing for your boy, and he is now in no pain. he lives on in your heart and in your memories. Please be well, and though it is hard, please don't blame yourself. You did the right thing.
