Shaving!!! Oh God!!!

Hi guys...

You'll never guess what happened!!! Gracie was tied up outside while we were out that night because she ROLLED IN HORSE ****! So she smelled and so result-the chain!!! When we came home she was COVERED in white oil based paint! there was a 2ltre pot of it sitting on something and she had wrapped her chain around something and made it fall down and yeah...speaks for itself!!! Mum's painting doors at the moment!!! Anyway, she's all gross and so I made an oppointment to get her SHAVED because this paint WILL NOT COME OFF so it has to be cut off!!! And she's a blue merl border collie x collie so she's long haired. So we can't just cut out chunks so rather I would shave her and have a beautiful, full, even coat grow back. But when I took her to her appointment the lady wouldn't do it because Grace was too nervy and freaked out so because of liability reasons they said no. So now I have to unfortunately take her to the vet morrow morning and get her sedated and then they're shaving her completely. She needs it off because she is uncomfortable and is trying to pull it out herself so it's not fair to her. Man what a problem-and you know what? she's going to look rather little and funny without her coat! But oh well. :-)

What and no pictures... You tease. I bet that was quite a sight. White oil based horse manure! - and smells unique as well!.

I think it's a very good idea to see the vet and make sure it's all off. I can't imagine it would be very good for the dog's coat, skin or digestive system to be left on. (dog will pull at with the only tool available - it's mouth).

It always amazes me how they can zero in on the worst possible mess they can get in.

As for looking funny without the coat ---- PICTURES PLEASE!!!

LOL What? How would you like it if someone shaved your hair just cause you wanted to go for a new look and dye it? LOL

Sounds like next you'll have to invest in some sunscreen for Gracie when she has no fur to protect her skin. Life would be so dull without our four legged clowns to entertain us.

Don't worry - it will grow back fine. My BC was shaved a couple of years in a row becuase she was so hot in the humid weather. She'll be fine.

I think I would try turpentine before I went for completely shaving. Maybe the vet can give you some sedatives for that so you don't have to worry about her trying to lick it.

According to http://www.dogs-in-canada.com/featur...thebasics.html

Paint: These days, most people use latex paint, which is water-soluble. Wash it out of the coat immediately, before it hardens, and because it is toxic. The only way oil-based paint can be removed is by cutting the affected fur off. Do not use varsol or turpentine! Don't allow your dog to chew the paint out.

Good luck with the shaving! My Border Collie doesn't eat poop..or roll in it, but my German Shepherd LOVES poop! She used to eat it all the time, but now she just sniffs it a lot haha. Hopefully we'll see some pictures soon?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Before and after would be nice. Oil-based paint, you are going the only way sorry to say and the sooner the better. The lesson in this is never to tether a dog near anything you don't want him into (or wearing).
