Any experience with PetSafe wireless fence?
We have two 6 month old goldens and 2 1/2 acres of property, with the only fences being around the pool and the horse paddock. I've been looking at the PetSafe wireless fence but one website cautioned against using it for dogs over 50 pounds, and another said it didn't work well with heavily furred dogs. Does anyone use this system?

I've known many people that have these fences; they seem to work amazingly well. The one exception was neighbors of ours had one (fence) and two Chows. Worked great on one of the chows & the other one could care less. They tried everything, adjusting the strength of the receptor putting a second line 1 ft in from the first, I don't know what all. The one chow never let it stop him. He would even stand on the fence line (they even had in around the interior of a 6-foot cedar fence that he kept breaking through). At one point, he had a severe burn on his throat from the continual current. They finally had to give up & take his receptor collar off. This is the only 'failure' I've heard of.

Please remember she is not talking about an underground fence. She is talking about on that is wireless. There is a transmitter place somewhere and the dogs wear a receiver collar. They only have a certain radius away from the transmitter they are allowed to go. I, myself, do not know anyone that has used one. I am very familiar with underground, invisible fencing though.

I've haven't had any experience with it either but it does have some of the same draw backs. Remember, with these kinds of fences you are only keeping your dog in. If there are any dogs or wild animals like coyotes, they can still come up and mess with your dog. And then you dog would be a disadvantage because it has a limited range that the other animal doesn't and the other animal will eventually figure this out. Also, there are dogs that don't care about the receptor and will endure the pain in order to go beyond the limit, I'm sure this is why it is not recommended for large and furry dogs. The fur and larger body size can decrease the effectiveness of the receptor.
However, most dogs do respond to the receptor and if there aren't any loose animals to worry about, then I think the system is a great idea. It's much more versatile since you can move it, change the range, and it is cheaper and easier to put in place that any other good quality fence. |

We have one (the wired) and it works great! We have a pointer and a Choc Lab. The pointer tests it every day! He knows how far he can go before he gets shocked. He goes until it beeps. We have 5 acres and use the Petsafe brand, as opposed to the Invisible fence brand. The Invisible fence was much more expensive and THEY have to put it in. We bought the initial kit: collar, flags, wire, reciever etc. for around $250. It only does a really small area so we just went to Home Depot and bought a reel of extra wire and construction flags for about $30! We buried it where we mowed or plowed (snow) but the rest we just layed on the ground in the woods. Retrievers are very easy to train, our Lab stays about 30 feet away from the line, just in case!
