Oso has a lump????

When I was rubbing Oso down tonight I felt a few hairs by his elbow that had managed to knit together. Instead of trying to rake it out I cut the knit off. I kept feeling the area for excess hair that had binched together and I found a lump on his elbow the size of a pea. Of course I panic and show my husband. He says that I worry to much and it is probably just a callous in the makings. Oso doesn't have any callouses....if a callous did start the hair would be little to none and the skin would be raw or inflammed. This thing is the size of a baby pea and it's pink. Any ideas?

I'm like that with my crew - always checking them for lumps and bumps. Most of the time they're warts or lipoma's - once with Bogey it was something serious.

If you have a vet visit scheduled in the next month or so, I 'd have it looked at then, unless it really starts to grow, ooze or get inflamed.

I'm like you Deb....I'm hands on with all of my dogs. Anything that doesn't look right or feel right I am off to the vet. Actually I do have to schedule a teeth cleaning for him soon so I can tell the vet to check and aspirate while he is under anesthesia. It doesn't feel warty to me and you can move it around. I have lost track how many times I rake this boy a day. Let's just say everytime before he comes back into the house I do a rake job on him. This "pea" is not inflammed and it looks to be the same color as his skin, light pink.

I always have lipoma's removed - usually with dental cleaning's, even though many owners feel comfortable leaving them alone and just keeping an eye on them.

I'm too much of a worry wart for that, plus what the vet thought was a lipoma on Bogey - and suggested we wait and watch - turned out to be cancer. But that doesn't mean I think that's what you should do. Bogey has a tiny bump on his ear now that I just had aspirated and she feels 100% sure it's a benign cyst so that one I'm leaving alone for now. Plus, I'm spending so much on Miko now it's getting to where I'm having to prioritize. I've never had to do that with their health care before but the money pot is not endless.

Gee, I didn't know your money pot was not endless and here I was ready to get into my car with a shovel and come dig in your back yard! It just seems strange that I have never felt this before. A few years ago vanilla had a wart in the crook of where the bottom of her ear starts. Actually my husband found it and off to the vet we went. He told us that it was a wart and they lazered it out right then and there. I guess I am on my way to the vet Tuesday to see what she has to say and then make the appointment to have his teeth cleaned and then go from there. This "pea" is not hard. It actually feels kind of mushy. Still it does bother me just knowing that I found this "thing."

Kirby has a recurring ingrown hair on his chin that is smaller than a half pea sized bump. His is a bump, not a lump. It's almost always there.

But wouldn't an ingrown hair be inflammed moo? This thing is so well formed you could cut it off with the scissors....NO!!! don't even THINK I would do something like that. It's just strange that all of a sudden it is there.

Jenna had a cancerous lump removed from her leg in Feb. It grew fast, it seemed like it was not there one day adn the next it was. I am a panic button when it come to lumps. Jenna gets subaecous cysts, small lumps just in the skin that you can get your fingers around and are not attached to the muscle; this lump on her leg was different, I could not get my finger around it and it was much larger. I took her to the Vet immediately ( the next day ) they aspirated it and found it to have abnormal cells. It was removed and found to be cancer. But luckily it was slow moving and localized.

Rudy recently had some lumps on his rib cage; being that he is 7 yrs old now I wanted them check out. They seemed different from Jenna's. They were soft and about the size of a silver dollar or Canadian loonie coin. They were attached, I could not get my finger around them or under them. I took Rudy to the Vet whom advised they were fatty deposits and dogs tend to get them when they get older ( I suppose we do too when we get older ).

Whenever in doubt call your Vet and ask what they feel is the best course of action. Havign lumps checked is never a bad idea because you never know.

Best wishes.

Hi

I think you are wise to have the vet check it out just to be on the safe side.

If it is soft and squishy then it may be a bursar ( housemaid's knee), if so I would just leave it to heal naturally and not have it drained as if you do so they can just fill up again and it keeps recurring. Bursars are harmless but if you have not experiencedone before it can get you in a panic.

It's fairly easy and quick to get it checked for cancer at the vet. If it isn't, you'll have peace of mind. If it is, the sooner you get it removed, the less invasive the procedure and the better the prognosis. Sophia had a lump on her rear that turned out to be a Stage 1 mast cell tumor. It was about the size of a cherry when we got it out and the surrounding tissue was ok.

Good luck!
