barking problem

I have two chesapeakes, a male that is about 4 years old, and a female pup about 5 months old. I'm having a hard time getting the pup to stop barking. when I tell her "quiet" she barks right back at me. any suggestions?

Your best bet is to find the source of the barking. Boredom? Attention? Territorialism?

She does not know what quiet means then. You must teach here. And you are allowing her to get away with that behavior if she is barking back at you. First teach her what quiet means. If she is barking find a way to make her stop. Hand around the muzzle, a squirt bottle, a rattle can. Use what you need to do to make her stop and then issue the command quiet. Good quiet. and let her go. Do this every time she barks. But do not allow her to get away with sassying you (barking at you). Please remember that puppies have no idea what any words or commands mean until you consistently teach them. Right now she thinks quiet means bark because every time you tell her quiet she barks. She doesn't have any grasp what the english word means. So now you need to wait until she stops barking, to issue the command. Soon she will realize that quiet means to hush up
