Anal Sacculectomy
So if Kirby ever impacts/ruptures/absesses/fistulates again, which seems to happen every two years, we would probably have an anal acculectomy done on him (removal of the anal glands) instead of repairing over and over again. He does not take bum pain well at all, and if he was to have a problem every 2 or 3 years, that would be a lot of pain potential pain for him, and there really doesn't seem to be a real cause. And he can tear it again after which is both disgusting & painful like he did this time, and yadda yadda yadda. Soooooooo....
Anyways I've been searching the internet high and low for all the information I can find. I've found what types of blades that the surgeons like the use, I even found a video of the surgery being done on the internet posted by Waltham! I'm reading that it's an easy procedure to flub up. For whatever reason my mother has been grilling me on this topic, and making my life h#ll on earth for not knowing the answer the every question she has, so does anybody have any first hand experience with this? Is it as risky as it sounds, or is that information outdated? Friend of a friend stories? |

Just make sure you go to a board certified surgeon. If they use paraffin wax to fill the sacs up, it makes the surgery pretty straight forward. Cause they then just dissect out and find the lumps in there.
I wouldn't let just any vet do the procedure, and make sure you ask lots of questions. How many have they done before? Do they use the wax? How successful are the outcomes with their own patients? Etc. etc. At our hospital, it doesn't seem to be a big deal. We don't do them very often. Since I have worked in our surgery department, I have seen 2, maybe 3 done? Good luck. |

I have been considering this with Sampson as well as he seems to have a small gland opening so always having issues expressing.
The paperwork I got from my vet had nothing with knives and I was actually told it was a rather simple procedure. The info I have on removing glands shows a type of forceps they put into the sac opening and simply pull out the gland I have also heard about it be done by laser. Don't have more info on that though. Of course, because it is by the bum a side effect could be inconstinence, but there are possible side effects with any type of surgery. I was told the porcedure would run around $300. |

I've also been told that because he has ruptured before (among just about every other degree of anal sac disease), that the nerves & muscles around his sac area would be "scattered," and not so smooth and definitive from eachother, which would make the procedure more difficult.
