Question He is Sleeping...

Sleeping is highly unusual for Kirby. In an average day (24 hour period), he will probably sleep about 5 hours.

I (ahem) *came home early* from classes yesterday to take him down to the dog park without little miss dead weight, and we did 6 laps around the pond. That's 8 miles including walking there and back, more distance for him than for me because I walk in a nice straight path, and he RUNS ahead, RUNS back, RUNS ahead, LOL. Anyways, that's not an unusual distance for him, we have done more in the past, and is very far from physically exerting for Kirby.

But we came home, and a couple hours later (the dog is powered by adrenaline), after dinner he went to my room, and slept, slept deeply. I mean he did not get up unless you were yelling and banging on the door. That is weird because he never sleeps deeply, even if he is asleep, you whisper "Kirby" and he's up on all fours again. It was 7ish pm, he slept through the night, got up for breakfast at 9, and has probably slept another 5 or 6 hours since then! In fact he's taking a nap on my grandma's couch right now. Something is definitely not right.

I'm guessing he did something to a muscle or a joint when he was running yesterday. Either that or he just aged 5 years, or had a brain warp with Holly. Really hard to say because he doesn't like it when I handle his feet regularly, and will always recoil if I feel them. If I drop a toy, he springs up, no real difference in his movement today, he just spends all his spare time sleeping. But he never was a reliable scale for his own pain threshhold, in fact, he's a terrible one. If he did hurt himself, especially early on in the walk, he would have chugged right through it (like I said, adrenaline owns him), and wouldn't show it in his gait unless it was broken, he's that kind of dog.

Hopefully it's nothing, and he'll snooze it all off, and be back to normal soon enough because this is weird.

I wish my dog would snooze like that. It was probably just the excitment and fun from walking without the little monster...lol I love kirbs, you can send him too me any time you want to get away from the adrenaline...lol

Excitement does NOT make my dog sleep, as much as that would be great. LOL

I think it's there are a number of factors:
1 Kirby is getting a little older, animals do usually settle down when then get older.

2 Kirby has Holly now. Because you've been taking her with you places too, he's probably not getting as much exercise and might be a little more out of shape... or they could be playing during the day (by playing I mean Kirby doing laps around Holly while she sleeps).

3 It could have just been an off day - we all have them.

Moo, I, like you, know my dogs to a tee. If anything is unusual, then my radar goes way up. Keep an eye on him as this is a change in behavior.

My guess would be that since you got Holly he has been running a little higher on adrenaline and not sleeping quite as much, even though he was tired.

But when you went and took him out and really worked that edge off he crashed and is now catching up.
