Can a dog catch a disease from smelling butt?

Uma has a UTI but is on meds. There is no more discharge from her vulva area. As of Saturday she will be on her meds for 5 days. Is there any chance that if a dog came and smelled her behind that the dog that is doing the sniffing get some type of disease? As much as I would love to take Uma to Barktoberfest, I do not want to put any other dogs in a health situation.

I know for humans once you have the antibiotic for 24 hours your harmless. I guess the same would count for animals. Might just want to call the vet to make sure.

She has an infection not a virus I would think she should be good to go.

Viruses are that nasty.

If it was bacterial and the dog doing the sniffiing had an open wound I would think there might be a chance but otherwise I doubt it.

When I took her to the vet on Tuesday we were supposed to have Obedience class that night. The vet said it would be fine to take her to class as long as we put a towel down for her to do her excercises on. I was not comfortable with that and we decided not to take her. At that stage of infection and her "dripping" ocassionally, I was not about to put any other dog in a risk of getting something. The dripping has stopped, there is no more licking and with the meds, the cranberry pills, and the live cultures in the yogurt I know she is doing much better. Plus she also had a shot of ampicillin, but can dogs actually catch something from smelling another dogs behind?

Agreed!!!! I think at this point, your best bet is to get it as cleared up as possible. As for catching something while sniffing....highly doubtful.

Now...can a dog with a UTI give it to another dog? When they get to playing really hard outside Oso will jump on her and start humping. I am hoping this cannot be transferred. Uma is till on meds.

The only thing really that I know thats serious is canine herpes. Some forms of parasites as well- but never heard of a UTI by sniffing..

No- its transfered by sniffing. Its harmless to adult dogs. If a pregnant female runs into it 21 days prior to delivery- it can be deadly to the new born pups. It takes 21 days for the adult dogs immune system to ride itself of it, and once contracted, the body is immune.
Females prior to breeding are checked for broscelosis and give to the male making him sterile- but that is basically the only " STD" in dogs.

So there is no way this UTI can be tranferred to Oso. Now you have my mind working overtime. In humans if a female has a yeast infection and then has sex, the male will be the recipient of the yeast infection and they can actually apss it back and forth to each other. I wonder if this happens to dogs also.
