Yes they have been doing it naturally for years, but if you want the best you can produce, with the least fatalities, then you need to do what's best for your Breeding Dogs.

Breeding starts long before you actually MATE your dog. Apart from all the normal genetic testing specific for your breed, plus the suitable mate, but if you are going down this road, I would assume you have researched your breed and found out all the info needed. This thread is not to show everyone and anyone how to breed, but more to help if you are intending and never done it before or your dog is already pregnant.
I do not condone indiscriminate breeding practices.

Dogs can get sexually transmitted diseases, It was common practice long ago, but has fallen from favour now, but a simple test can be perfomed to rule this out.

VACCINATIONS...These should be up to date, if your female is due for a booster around the time of her heat cycle then it would pay to schedule the shot earlier, about a month before hand. It won't hurt to get it done a little early, but cannot be done once she is pregnant.

WORMING...The pregnant dog needs extra worming, once before mating, once during pregnancy then again after whelping, it is important that you purchase a good quality product suitable for PREGNANT girls, one that is broad spectrum, there are more than 2 kinds of worms.

FLEA TREATMENTS...I use a product called Advantage, I have found it quite safe, but never apply it when she is pregnant or lactating. Please check the label of your product and make sure it is safe to use on pregnant and lactating girls.

DIET/HEALTH...She needs to be of optimum weight, an overweight dog is not a good candidate for pregnancy, neither is an underweight one. Your dog should be at her desired weight long before her heat cycle, don't diet an intented mating dog, it can reduce her fertility rate.
Her health needs to be the best to bear the best healthy pups. A good balanced diet before mating gets you on the right track before you even begin.
