Blown ACL
Hi - I'm new to this BB and actually a fairly new dog owner! I have a Boxer and a Rottie, and the Rottie has just been diagnosed with a blown acl - which is supposed to cost mega-bucks to fix via an operation called "TPLO". Since this dog was a rescue (ie we didn't pick him out from puppyhood) my husband will never agree to spend that kind of money "It's just a dog" after all. (But truthfully - spending $3K+ is a bit outrageous....) Any experience with this kind of injury? Will it stabilize? I am inclined to just let him live with it - he runs like the wind and you'd never know he's lame, but when he walks or stands he does limp and favor it. My other vet says to just treat it symptomatically when the inevitable arthritis hits... Suggestions???

Hello and welcome,
Sorry to hear about yr dog's ACL but it needs to be taken care of,even if it costs money!. This is an operation that is done quite often and has very good results which will give many more yrs to yr rott. I truly hope you can convince yr husband!. Would love to see some pictures of yr babies and good-luck with the operation. |

Getting it fixed is the best option BUT it is costly so here is a few other things to think about.
I have known of dogs with torn ACL's that did not hasve the surgery and they did recover fine or ended up with a slight limp throughout life. I would definitely let him try to rest and have minimal exercise at the point to help it heal alittle better. If he is allowed to run around he may slip or put too much weight on it causing it to worsen. Yes there will probably be arthritis mucjh earlier in ife due to it. I have also know of many dogs to injure their opposite leg due to compensating. The dog will be compensating for the lack of use of that leg and causing other joints to become sore as well. I know this doesn't give you a solution but just some other thoughts. You could have a very arthritic dog at a very young age. |

Welcome.. I am posting this and hope it helps. Most vets will take payment situations..
" JUST A DOG From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog." Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise." "Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog," just smile, because they "just don't understand." author unknown" |

Borzoimom, thanks for that - it's excellent! Thank you to all for your comments and advice...I'll continue to work on the hoosband and maybe he will find it in his heart to finance this... although we're in the middle of a house renovation which is costing us more and more and more than we ever planned so I'm pretty well s-o-l at this point...!
