Tell me more about PinHipp

First of all please correct my spelling on this. We have talked OFA many times and even a few times on PinHipp. I have read in this forum that PinHipp can be as conclusive as an OFA testing. So why should we wait for an OFA if we can have the PinHipp done earlier in the life of a pup?....Can anyone enlighten me about a PinHipp...who gives these tests, how long does the test take and how long does it take to get the results. Also is there a price difference between PinHipp and OFA? Is a PinHip scored the same way?

i am very interested in this myself boels usually do sabt which is quite diffent and is generally % based below 75 is not considered good 80 and up is breeding quality 85 and up is better.
here in america thats now changing to penn hip is what is starting to be used but know little about it myself and would not mind a crash course.

Well Ash, you certainly found a jammed packed site filled with knowledge. I have many questions to ask people in the forum who have had PennHip for their dogs opposed to OFA.

I will not do pennhipp on the large breed dogs,as they have to be put under in order to do the x-rays.
Plus they want you to do it every two years so they can tell if their findings are correct.
Plus it only tells the laxtisity not the actual bone structure.So a dog with shallow hip sockets can still past pennhip is the laxtisity(sp) is still there.
Plus you can get two different readings.A 110 lb woman would not get the same results as a 200 lb man.

I was told ruty that a PennHip was just as good as an OFA, maybe even better. For example...what if you are showing a dog? What would you do? If you are lucky for your dog to make it to CH and then have an OFA done after the two year period of a dogs life. What has this accompiished? You have just wasted so much time, money, travel, and now you cannot breed?...was all of this for naught?

another thing i was reading that sorta made me go humm was the fact there some who claim penn hip is not always accurate for young dogs and there have been some inaccurasies.
if i understood it right was when reading the results if you have a dog and it scores like we will say 50 percent that represents your dog has hip like 50 percent of the population of that breed .30 is much better and that is suposabley indictive of no problems later(well much less likely). that score gives you a idea how much laxity of the tendons between the hip joint and the femur head is in other words tighter is better depending on the breed and size of the dog all that is calulated. the numbers they use are by calulating the distance and the angle of the femur head relative to the acetabulam(and a few other things as well) if things are too loose you very well might see djd degenerative joint disease because if there is more friction between those two surfaces there is more room for things to slide where they are not supposed to causeing more wear and tear so if its really bad its going to show up on the dog the older it gets. i know thats a bit simplistic but the whole thing has not sunk into my itty bitty brain yet not to mention its 4 in the morning.

seems to me they have not figured it all out yet and this is the new version of shooting in the dark its new but not perfect. they really need to study this more.

I don't live my life waiting for my dogs to pass.If they do they do if they don't they don't.
It does not mean you cannot still show them and have fun with them.If you are just into showing for breeding then people should just purchase an older dog who is already passed it's health tests.

I don't know anyone that would sell you an "older dog" that already has it's CH and has passed all his heath tests etc and is still able to breed. This is the reason why I have opened up this thread so I can learn a little bit more on these processes.
