Losing a toenail..

My vet thinks Femka might loose her toenail. The toe is broken and " the rising ridge of the nail" is cracked on the inside. Has anyone ever had this? Because Femka has already shown signs of serious stress on sedation, the attitude is wait and see if she does. The options now are " wait and see" or risk sedation to remove the nail from the toe.. The leg has no infection and neither does the nail. However- it does look odd. As soon as she wakes up I will post a picture what it looks like..

Hudson had to get his nail removed, we thought it was broken, but then it turned out to be dislocated...either way it had to come out. I have pictures of it in anouther thread, if you want I can post them again...but his nail also would not stop bleeding every time he walked on it, and was very painful, and also ended up getting infected.

My SIL had that problem with her dog, found out it was cancer. Be very careful in what you do.

Oh could you please the link or repost pictures? And tell me more about like after this was done, and what type of sedation did they use etc. Can they do this on a local?

Thank you for the comment but we are sure it was just a trama to the toe, the pad etc and wasn't something that just showed up..

If broken, you might need to have it,removed so that she doesn 't damage something else,by walking awkwardly!.I think you said in another thread, that it had caused some pain in her neck or something.I truly hope,it comes off by itself!.Keep us posted!.L

Okay here is the picture. You will see a thick white line in the nail- that is the point of a crack. Second you will see the nail is uh lifted at the base of the toe. ( to all- sighthounds have a hare like toe and nail- what would be considered long in other breeds- this isnt a long nail in a sighthound. ) Femka has always had long quicks. We even tried to have the nails cut back, but the quick moved with the nail. Even a mild trim makes a quick at the nail..

Hey...here is the thread...

http://www.prodoggroomingsupplies.co...ht=Hudson+Nail

As for the sedation, I would have to check his file and that is at home...so I would have to get back to you on that one. I know that what they used was a local as well as a compleat sedation, that was reversed within about 20 minutes after the surger.

The actual surger was really neat...I got to stay for the whole thing...it was done on Hudsons nub so we were really worried about it causing a problem because he really only has two toes on the nub...but it was compleatly healed within a week, and I didnt have to give him any pain medication after the surgery....I think everything else is in the thread...if you have anymore questions ask away...I even still have the toe nail they took out!!! It is with his baby teeth!!

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!! Well maybe we have a chance of her not losing the nail??? What do you think??? The pressing problem now is that since wrapping the paw when she cut it probably made her favor the leg, throwing out her disc in her back- the disc problem right now takes priority and they didnt want to stress her more. ..
/edit- thank you for the information on sedation. My vet said with no pressence of infection now on her toe, it can wait.. Poor femka- she cant win for losing here lately! /
