Got frontline, went to put it on, parted the hair...

*For mods, was kicked off line as this was posting, if you ever find the other please delete it, thanks *

And there, on his shoulder right where I was going to put the F/T control is a TICK!!!!! You have know idea how bad I feal for not finding it sooner but let me tell you, at least once a day since this whole flea thing I have been going over every square inch of Jinjo, just to check him over.
I have no idea when it got on him, but I had the tube of frontline opened and as my mother parted his hair so I could get it on, she said theres something in his fur. Of coarse the first thing I said was "probably bird seed" (his favorite spot to lay is under the Mo's pen), but as she revealed it I knew what it was.
So I got out several of my books to find a picture for my mother, but couldn't find ANY info in them on how to remover one. Luckily she was on the Internet and looked it up, and all places said to pull on it but not hard enough for it to come out as it will eventually give up and release, which it did. One thing I did that I think I shouldn't have though was I had started to put the frontline on just as we found it, so I had emptied the tube before it came out, I feel really bad about doing that now.
At least Jinjo has something on him now (and thanks to Drs.F/S I didn't pay a fortune!). I would like to ask though, and I already know everyone's going to say take him to the vets NOW but there closed or will be by the time we get there, when we first found it the skin seemed thickened an white where the tick was attached and as we were removing it and afterwards, I noticed that around the whitened area its all red in a ring pattern? Is this normal? It wasn't a dear tick (can't remember the name though), but he does have the Lyme vaccine. Any more info till tomorrow would help.
I mean in all my life I've actually never had a dog get a tick (think my grandmothers last dog got one once, can't remember), so any good bad things to look for would be great. I really don't know why I worry so much, he is a "farm dog".

He should be fine now. Just keep an eye on the area. The problem with pulling ticks off is if you leave the head, they grow a new body. The frontline should kill it if this has happened though. I would just keep it clean and keep an eye on it. Sounds like it was there for a while... long enough to do a little damage to the surrounding tissue.

Make sure that you FLUSH the tick down the toilet as well....DO NOT THROW IT IN THE GARBAGE.

They make special tick tweezers that are really good at making sure the whole tick is removed, not just the body. Dr's F/S probably has them. Maybe something to consider in the future for your arsenal.

Don't panic too much about the tick. My son had one a couple of years ago, firmly attached to his underarm As my son is a renal dialysis patient we went to A&E (what we call Emergency Room in the UK) just to be on the safe side. They sent for a nurse who lives in the farming community. She took one look at it and said it was a sheep tick. It was a stubborn devil but she got it out eventually. It didn't come out in one piece. The body came first and the head after a bit more (not so) gentle persuasion.

Once the body is detached from the head, like everything else the tick is dead. What happens is if the head remains buried in the skin (whether this is an animal or a human), infection can set in as the head decomposes and that is why it is important to get the head out. My son didn't have any effects at all, although he was very embarrassed. I've never seen his face so red LOL. He'd taken our dog (the late Sadie) out for a walk and as he tires out very easily had sat down for a while and that's when we think the tick decided to have a wander up my son's body, finally deciding that his underarm was the ideal place for a spot of lunch!!!

You can get Lymes disease off ticks but it is quite rare. It's more commonly contracted from coming into contact with rats' urine.

As for the Frontline, that won't do any harm at all to your dog - only to any fleas etc. that are lurking in his coat so don't worry.

Just make sure you got the head with the twisors. ( obviously). Keep an eye on it for any bump. I usually put neosporan where I pulled it out just in case there is a surface infection.
As far as frontline- I found do not brush the coat for 3 days or you will end up with a "oil slick".. lol. Also its best to not wash the dog for 3 days after applying or 3 days before.

Well, I looked at the spot this morning and it looked good, not red at all. I'm just glad it wasn't a deer tick, but it still put up a fight, was about 15-20 mins before it let go. We know we got it all because the head was there and OMG those are some NASTY pinchers they got ! I can't believe Jinjo was so good about it, all I can think is that he must have gotten it Wednesday evening when he followed me into the field cause it sounded like someone was ATVing down our pipeline.
And AtomicSkies, we burn everything out here, although when I was a kid my brother and I found it cooler to put wasps in the freezer (my mother so hated it when we did that ).
Deb, I've seen those at Petco before, but have always thought "I don't think I'll need those", oops , guess I should get them next time.

If I was enjoying lunch I wouldn't be keen on someone pulling me away either

The tick that was attached to my son will forever be known in our local hospital as Timmy The Tick Tock Tick

How to embarrass my son - just mention it.

Hope he never reads this thread LOL.
