Border Collie housebreaking
We've got three border collie puppies at home and have come to a peculiar problem with housebreaking. The puppies have a pretty consistent schedule of eating moring food, and going outside... at which point they SHOULD be relieving themselves. Instead, they insist on playing. After playing, they are put inside and immediately defacate on the floor! No matter how long they stay outside, they are still too busy playing to do their business. Anyone have any help they could offer to fix this problem? Much thanks.

Have you tried taking each dog out by itself or in pairs but put them on leashes. My preference would be to take each dog out in the same order each day (largest dog last) once they have gone, they can go in a play area.
Only after all dogs have peed & poop would I allow play interaction. It is also the time I would spend a few moments on some basic leash training, sit, etc. |

All of them? Whoooieee. Wow. Yep, as Dax says. One at a time, distraction lengthens things.
When you come in, be watching them, I know, you don't have that many eyes, but it has to be. If you see any excessive sniffing, funny walking, whisk the pup up and bring him back outside. Do they have crates, or are the confined to a room when unattended? |

How old are they?
How long do you leave them outside? It sounds like you don't crate them, I don't crate either and do have some house training tricks. P.S. - Lucky you to have three BC's. I love 'em - can we have piccies please? |

Another thing I forgot about... they are crated for the night and do not mess ALL night. During the day, no one is home so they are let out of the crate since it certainly isn't fair to leave them in their all day alone and they do pretty well.
I can try for pics... don't have any here, but they exsist.. and if anyone in the Montana area is interested, they are for sale. Wonderful dogs, Milo's almost all black with no collar, Bull is big, black with a nice collar, and Sampson is black and brown with crazy haphazard white markings. I'll probably be taking Bull or Sampson for myself. Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a try! -- Tarpan |

lol I've noticed with my own puppies , their "hold it" time drastically reduces when they are playing . Good advice already given . I might also try shampooing the area they have been going , try and eliminate the smell . There are also products you can buy , to spray the area of the yard where you do want them to go .
