Strange Question
First off, if you have this breed, please do not take offense. I've just never met a nice one yet and I'm sure there must be nice ones out there!
I need to know if anyone has any tips for me to "get over" my biased opinion of a certain dog breed. I've had 2 families contact us about adopting that either own them or they are at their home all the time. I am usually one of the most open minded people I know and for some reason -I am having a hard time getting beyond this. Any advice? I'm even thinking about contacting the breed club if there's one near by so I can meet enough to find a really nice one! I do not want to be biased in any way, shape or form when dealing with pup placements. Anyway, it's a Schnauzer. Thanks so much as always. |

Now I have someone with 2 of them that used to be a breeding pair until the female started having seizures??? I'm sure it's much more than just the breed this time... I know I need to be unbiased.... this is just tough for me on a couple of different levels I suppose

I think you need to put it in the same perspective that you do with pitties. It is the people, not the dog that is the problem. The mean and nasty schnauzers you've met are that way because of poor training and socialization. I think this would be a good way to tell if your adoptees are a good home. Meet their schnauzer and if that dog has been socialized and trained well, then they could be a great home.

Like in all breeds, you will find some nice ones and some, not so nice!.
A friend of mine has 2 and I train her giant schaunzer.they are really great dogs and very loveable. At lleast the standard and giant ones are.For the miniature, they are very yappy and can be ankle-biter but it obviously depends on the training!.All the giant and standard schaunzer,I met ,were really loving and fun to be around with.go to a dog show or go & see a breeder but it's a great breed. |

I know of a few giants that I run into doing agility. They are very nice.
BUT one has the right to not like a certain breed and if you find that this breed is too difficult for you is there someone else at the rescue that can do it. I mean if you are not 100% comfortable around the breed, you may not being doing the pup justice in finding him a new home so maybe someone else can do it. |

I did not expect to see it be schanuzers lol..... I love them, it is the owner that does not feel it should socialize or train the small dog that has ruined them for you I am sure.

Honestly I think they are a very attractive dog and I've wanted to like them. The last one I met at a home visit for Houston was adorable with his little mohawk she styled on him. He wanted to eat Houston up though (Houston was the other little blonde foster pup I had months ago).
I think I should go do this with our director. That way, if they are actually nice, I can get over it. If not, our director can be my impartial brain LOL Jury is still out on how he is with cats and everyone that's applied has at least 2 of them. I wish I could figure that out more quickly. He's vet cleared now and can go to a home any time. My other concern with this family is that they want him for the 12 year old girl. I will have to make sure the whole family wants him. I don't want him in a place that he's a leverage tool to reach a girl that's a tweener (in between child and teenager) |

I had a Schnauzer growing up, she was our family dog for 16 years. I used to dress her up and push her around in a baby carriage
She was very sweet and very very smart. She was the 4th sister in our family!

Teresa, I couldn't believe the breed when I got to the bottom of the post. I owned a Schnauzer who was a doll. My friend raises Schnauzers and her's are just the nicest, laid back guys in the west. I've met all sizes of them from Giant to Mini's and they are a wonderful breed.
You have to take all breeds one-by-one, there are bad breeders out there and bad owners out there that reflect poorly on any breed. I'm sure you come across this with Gen being a Pit Bull. A poorly raised/bred animal should not taint the whole breed. Home visits can be iffy at best with introducing another animal into the mix. Have you thought of first meeting the owner and other pup in a neutral zone such as a park. Then proceed to the owners property once they have been introduced on neutral territory? Many, many, many breeds can be territorial at first, the list would be too long for a post. |
