bloody nose

So I get this frantic call from my sister about 10 minutes before I am supposed to leave work : "There's blood everywhere!!! The gray dogs knocked over a picture and Roslynd cut her nose, and there's blood everywhere!!! What should I do??"

HOLY CR*P!!!

So I tell her "put some EMT gel on it, call Dad, and I'll be home in 10 minutes"
I fly out of work, drive 60 all the way home, and walk in the door to find Roslynd with this little slice on her nose. But by the way my house looked, it would have seemed as if a small anmal had been murdered. Blood on the windows (from smudgy nose), blood ALL OVER the couch, blood on my rugs, on my floor.... It was awful!! And poor Roz, her nose just wouldn't stop bleeding!! So, finally I got it all cleaned up, and got her nose to stop bleeding, then we go outside to pee and it opens again. With the 0F temps, it opened back up in a second! And if she grabs a toy, or tries to eat, rings the bell to go out to potty: bloody bloody nose again She just keeps licking the gel off!!

Any tips??

In between all this, I called the vet (they were closed but still there)... they said to just keep putting the EMT gel on it, and keep an eye on it. Apparently noses are very difficult to suture, and the slice is not too deep, so they said she didn't need to come in.

So, any tips on how to keep her gray nose from bleeding? I think I'm going to sleep out on the couch with her tonight.... I love her, but really don't want her blood all over my nice flannel sheets.... you know???

Not sure what EMT gel is for -assuming an antiseptic? I might be tempted to try a steptic pencil -but would verify usage on a dog first. Poor Roslynd.

EMT gel is just like a styptic pencil.
I'd put a band-aid on it to cover the gel. Actually, were it Bailey, I'd probably make her wear her muzzle for half an hour or so to give it a rest too. If it's painful that's probably why she's licking.

Is EMT gel just like a vaseline?

Don't use vaseline, that's a doggy laxative. But how about liquid bandaid that dries to form a skin?

Good luck, get better Roslynd.

It's not Vaseline.

From www.emtgel.com
Quote:
The collagen in EMT Gel interacts with the wound at every stage to reduce pain and promote healing. When a wound is fresh, the gel works with the blood to form a plug and encourage natural blood-clot formation. At the same time it forms a gelatinous barrier to protect the wound from bacterial contaimination or further injury and seals off nerve endings that signal pain.

Weim , have you tried plain old flour ? I've used it before , to stop a claw clipped too short . Or , a piece of toilet paper , the fibers help create a clot , and can be removed easily once it dries .

Oh Wow!! poor, poor Roslynd, hope she is a bit better today and you stopped the bleeding.

Big, Big, hugs from Aunty Ellierat. Lots and lots of slobby kisses too.

Weim, sorry about Roslynd. How is she doing now ? You need to apply pressure and then hope it doesn't open again. I am surprised the syptic stuff didn' t work.

I actually cut my finger the other day and the same thing happend , it bleed like crazy. I guess it all depends on where the cut is.

Hope all is well.
