Rescue shelter funding?

I was thinking about this and wondering why rescues don't offer to sell products. When someone wants to adopt a new dog, they're going to need to buy a new leash, collar, bed, food, etc. Wouldn't it make sense to sell such products at the rescue center and use any money made to support the rescue center? It seems better than increasing the cost of adopting a dog or doing your typical fund raising by having jars at local businesses.

Does anyone know of a rescue that does something like that? Or would there be some technicality in all of it and make the rescue lose their non-profit status even though the profit would be the same as any money they made from adoption fees?

Most of our rescues do offer these things, in fact on I homecheck for actually has a stall at a market selling these products in aid of the rescue she runs. She has the items donated by a local pet shop and sells them when people adopt at dog or at the market. I'm surprised your shelters don't do this????

Humane society here has leashes and collars at least. Not sure about anything else.

Yes, our Humane Society has an entire store, however, some of the no kill shelters are operating on limited funds and unless the items are donated to them, they do not have the funds to put the money out to buy them to sell in their shelter.

The shelter where we adopted Buddy is barely making it, we donate bags of dog food to them periodically.

Figures, I guess the rescues around here are just really lame. I don't know, they put out donation jars, do walk-a-thons and stuff like that but I've never seen one that has their own store. The boarding kennel I worked at had a store and most vet clinics do, it just makes sense that a shelter would too.

The shelter we got Sampson from sold us a choke collar to go with him. Yes I said choke. They actually sent a choke instead of just a flat buckle

I have noticed a lot of rescue groups selling things donated to them on eBay to raise money.
