Is there a 'stool softening' food for dogs?

Honey Bee's stools are always too hard. Her and Buttercup eat the same in every way except Buttercup gets a little more food (1 1/2 cup twice a day as opposed to Honey Bee's 1 cup twice a day.) Buttercup poos naturally - just fine. I wonder, do you think if I gave Honey Bee more food that that would make the difference? Buttercup only weighs a few pounds more but is proper weight for her size. Honey Bee is proper weight right now and more food makes her gain weight and the Vet says to put her on a diet (twice now.)

I was just wondering if there is something I can give Honey Bee that will make her more easy in the going department.

What say ye who know about such things?

TIA,

Ken

I know pumpkin in small amounts can be used to harden stools. In larger amounts it will soften. It's basically fiber. But I'm not sure if that could be your long term solution. Perhaps you could switch foods?

I would talk to your Vet's nutritionist about adding a couple of drops of salmon oil, or even a little vegtable oil to her food.

I do know that chicken skin is a natural laxative for my dogs.

Mmmmm Chicken skin from fire roasted chicken - she would like that idea.

I'll check with the vet. They probably wonder where I get all these ideas.

I'm not telling.

You are my secret source for good doggie ideas.

I'll report back if they give me advice.

For a 37 pound dog how many tablespoons of pumpkin?

Will that qualify me to start calling her "Pumpkin" then?

: )

I don't want to start switching foods, it is such a mess and they love the food they have (Lamb & Rice adult dog from Nutro Foods.) It gives no problem to Buttercup, and never used to be a problem for Honey Bee.

I'm looking for something like Dax recommended, or the Pumpkin. Something I can add to bring things about to more normal

How does she do with dairy? You could try a little cottage cheese. I do know for some dogs, dairy will soften their stools. (Too much = the runs)

Maybe a little more fiber. I add sweet potato to their food a few days a week and it seems to do the trick.
