Mira's hips update

Well she was doing so bad that I talked to my vet and they squeezed her in today. Bad news. She has "shallow sockets" her ball doesn't fit into the hip socket and it dislocates. So we may have to do a total hip replacement. We are seeing a specialist in Calgary. I'm just so upset. I will post more later.
Thanks for all the kind thoughts.

There's a yahoo group devoted just to Canine Hip Dysplasia.

When I went through this with Roxy they helped me so much.

Everyone I spoke to that had had FHO's, TPO's or THR's had said it was worth it and they'd do it again in a heartbeat. Post care is difficult, but 6 months compared to the rest of your dog's life? They all said it was worth it.

So if you decide to go ahead with the surgery, I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised with the outcome years down the road. Technology has advanced fortunately for our beloved pets, and from what I've read and heard, it's a good option for dogs that can't live on supplements alone.

Sending good thoughts and wishes your way.

I'm so sorry S! Phoebe has bad hips too but she's not in the same affect as Mira right now. I decided when I found that out that if she needed surgery, I would get it and meanwhile have done everything to try to help the onset time frame and severity. Obviously I dont' know if it's all helping or not at this point but I am willing and able to get the surgery if/when it's necessary for her.

Hugs and let us know what kind of plan you come up with for her.

I know this is all so much to take in right now, but my friend has a Rottie who had a hip replacement when she was 3 and she is doing great at 10 yrs old! I wish you the best.

I'm sorry to hear that your dog has such bad hips but keep yr hopes up cos in most cases,HD is operable.
2 of my dogs had a complete hip replacement where in both cases, they cut the top of the bone so that it would stay in the socket of the hip.One dog was run over by a car and the other one,by a bike.
Both were herding dogs. One was a Pyrenean Shepherd of about 26 pds and the other one was a BC of 65 pds, both operated by the same vet, about 20 yrs ago.
In both cases,we were told to keep them, underweight so as to have less pressure on the hips and to stop any kind of jumping, for life. They both lived a long life(to 13 and 14 yrs) and were still running just as much as any other dogs.I could take them, both for a 10 km bike ride without so much as a limp. They did limp from time to time but mostly when the weather changed.
For the care, after the operation,we were told to keep the dog,on the leash for 2 mths and to force him,to use the operated leg, by only allowing him to walk, very slowly. No running was allowed.Once, the stitches were out, swimming was obviously the best remedy and this, should not be,a problem with a lab.We were to go in the water with them so that they wouldn't jump from the side.
They both led a normal life, we just kept them very thin. The idear was that you had to see the ribs when both dogs were being stacked.
I hope you find the right operation for yr dog and that it will also be a success, like it was for our dogs!.
Hope i answered some of yr questions and if you have more, ask me.
Do keep us posted on any news.Laurie

I am so sorry to hear this. I had a dog that had a TPO on both sides and after a considerable recovery period could run like the wind. There's light at the end of this tunnel!

Prayers and hugs your way!
