I found a new lump on Bogey

Late last night while I was cuddling with Bogey I found a marble sized hard lump way under his chin where his neck and head meet. It doesn't feel fluid-filled. It's relatively hard, but moveable.

As many of you know, Bogey has had cancer in the past found by my discovering lumps - though they were larger. He had two surgerys, radiation and chemo treatments. After a long recovery period and lots of complications with pneumonia, feeding tubes, breathing tubes and an allergic reaction to a cancer med, he has been fine for the past, well I think it's been about two years now.

Even if this is benign I think it will have to be removed because it's pressing right up against his vocal cords (dogs do have vocal cords, right?). If it were to grow, I think it would be dangerous for him.

I'm going to call the vet first thing Monday and get him in asap. I know full well I've been blessed to have him this long after his initial diagnosis, but I can't help but feeling sick to my stomach. Chemo is typically not a cancer cure in dogs like it can be in people. It just buys time, usually 18-24 months I've been told.

Sorry you’re going through this Deb. I hope it’s nothing serious. Sending lots of positive vibes Bogey’s way!

Deb....I am so sorry to hear that about Bogie. Hopefully it is just a fatty tumor, but you are right to get him to the vet ASAP. Will you know anything on Monday or will the lump have to be sent out for testing?

I don't know what she will want to do. Usually she wants to start with an aspiration, but I won't stand for this anymore because one of his previous lumps which she aspirated and thought was o.k. turned out to be cancerous. It was only because I insisted that it was caught early. If that hadn't happened I am feel certain Bogey would have already been gone. Plus, this is in such a bad location, I'm hoping we won't have to sit and argue about it. In other words, it's coming out one way or another. They will have to send it out and it usually takes a few days. I just hope she can see him on Monday. They have a very busy practice.

It's times like these when it's hard to traverse between the holistic and regular vets. I know if I call the HV, she will want to try some herbs, etc., before removing it, but my gut tells me to stick with traditional medicine on this and use the HV for immune system rebuilding.

When you told me the story about Bogie having aspirations before and how you insisted on taking it farther we are all glad that you did. No offense but I would not mess with the HV right now either considering Bogie has had cancer before. Nip it in the bud before this lump gets any bigger. Oso had an aspiration if you remember, but his lump was and still is mushy. I know this sounds tacky but will insurance help cover this or are you on your own.

Another thing I did not know Deb is that cancer has a higher rate or returning in animals.

Sorry to hear you found a lump....The other thing about it being on his neck is that you don't want it to grow too big and push on his trachea.
You and Bogey are in our thoughts and prayers.

I am sorry you found another lump. Since its on the neck maybe its just a lymph node encapsulated ( spelling?) and might not have to be removed. I do not have experience with cancer, but I can offer my thoughts and prayers for the situation..

No, on my own. The only one I have a cancer policy on is Cali.
