Help - need advise for Poppy...

It's 5.50am here and I've been up all night with Poppy... she keeps coughing, sounding as though she's got something in her throat but then brings up foam. She was sick on Friday but I put that down to hubby feeding her stuff he shouldn't have.

She keeps doing this coughing/foam thing about every hour and half and then settles back down. She goes out to eat grass (presumably to try to help).

Oh and her poop was a bit sloppy last night but nothing too bad (again just put it down to hubby feeding her extras).

Is this kennel cough? Do I need to get her to the emergency vet? I've taken a video so I can show the vet as she's not doing it constantly.

Help...

Is it a deep chest honking cough? That could be kennel cough which is not life threatening. Have you taken her temperature? Is she distressed?

What about discharge? Any nasal discharge?

You can try making her more comfortable with a humidifier in the room (not too close to her), light patting on her sides to help bring up the phelgm.

I would call the ER vet in the morning and see what they say whether to bring her in. I would worry about her bleeding issues.

From Dog Owner's Home Vet Handbook

High, harsh, dry barking cough is typical of kennel cought (cough without phelgm)

Moist bubbling cough = fluid & phelgm

High, weak gagging cough associated with swallowing or licking = sore throat

The book says if accompanied by a fever, should be treated by vet.

I think I can hear Poppy asking for Auntie Dax's famous chicken soup.

Hers eyes seem a bit watery but apart from her looking miserable there's nothing else to report. It's a hacking cough.

I just called the vets we're taking her in now...

Always safe than sorry. Let us know how the vet visit goes..

Please let us know how you and Poppy make out at the vet. Vanilla had something like that about a year ago. She would cough and cough and it was accompanied by a fever. We took her to the vet, the vet gave her a shot and some meds and within 24 hours she was right back to her old self.

Please let us know what the vet says. I am so glad you are taking her in. My first Beagle used to cough all the time, turned out he had chronic bronchitis. He was on and off meds for years. This does not sound like what Ali had though, I hope this is just a virus.
