I found a dog yesterday

As I was driving to work, there was this black lab wondering around. I stopped and saw the saddest site. He was bleeding and had fur missing, he had a collar mark, from a collar that grew into his fur, but was removed. He had the most soulful eyes I have ever seen. He just looked at me like "I'm done". I took him to our rescue, but he probably has mange and I can't foster him with my own dogs. So the pound took him, but promised us that they would call us if no one claims him and his time is up. How do you foster a dog who has a contangious disease, I know Dobermom did it with Lady Rose, but do you have to keep them seperated all the time? He is also very old, and I don't know if he would be adopted. My rescue said that if it came down to it we would take him out of the shelter and put him down ourselves with people who care. I think someone just dumped him off to die in the field with no dignity or respect. Even with all his sores and pain, he still wagged his tail to greet me.........

Most mange is triggered due to an immune shut down. Using responsible seperation usually does the trick. Regular parasites such as hookworms etc are easier for your dogs to catch using the same yard. When I would get a foster that had a problem, I just seperated them having the new foster use outside my yard as the potty site. These sound like DM and usually not contagious to other dogs. A vet will know if its that bad or autoimmune triggered.. A normal healthy dog will not get DM.

democoptic mange. Its like mites. And I am making a huge assumption its even there.. Maybe your vet can tell you if just a good medicated bath for the sores and wounds would do the the job..

They don't think its abuse, just an old dog with a "skin problem". This dog could be in a LOT better shape, he needs a bath and some vet care. Am I powerless here?

Only your local shelter would know that one. Depends on how long he has been lost .. Do you have a " dog running at large" fine there? I am sure your shelter could state the dog has to go to the vet, and maybe they could put a time frame on it.. I am not sure about Canadian laws. Even in one state laws can be different county to county..

OMG, how can these people show their face? I wonder how long this poor dog has been wondering around? Can the owners just come pick up their dog without being questioned? It does not seem right.
